vented gas tank?
08/05/14 at 18:12:07

Is the gas tank on the savage vented or non vented? I plan on covering up the stock speedometer hole and installing a new gas cap with weld in bung but need to know if the stock one is vented or non vented.

The cap is vented on the non-California models.  The tank on California models has a metal tube that is the vent, and it connected to a charcoal filter that sat on the mount for the muffler bracket.

If you are doing enough welding to fill in the speedometer hole and weld in a new filler neck....you obviously have the ability to weld in a vent tube.

Thanks Dave . No I'm not doing the work I wish I had the skills to do that (or any metal work for that matter) but I don't. Sad The guy that hardtailed my frame is doing the work for me. He was going to cover the hole and relocate the new weld in gas cap to the center but I think I'll leave it on the right side so I have room for the mural on the finished tank. The gas cap is a seven sins choppers skeleton key cap and they make vented or non vented I just wasn't sure. I hope it turns out as smooth as the one you did that thing was nice.

I have desmogged my '96 California model. Is there a way to get rid of that annoying hose under the tank and seal it? Is there a possibility of drilling a vent hole in the cap? Where? Can I replace my California cap with a 49 state vented model? I don't mind carrying an extra gas cap key. Thanks!
