Rear Tire Recomendation

I tried the search function and came up with nothing. My 09 S40 has less than 6000 miles and it looks like I may only get maybe a couple of thousand more on my rear tire, and that may be pushing it.

A couple of questions: How many miles to you average on a rear tire and what replacement do you recommend.

It came with IRC brand, which I've never heard of, but the same size is also available from Dunlop for a few dollars more, which I consider a proven brand.

.You're going to get 50 different answers.Dunlop's are good tires.5-7,000 miles is about average.I usually go on the less expensive side.I build some bikes and sell them.Usually Kenda.The stock IRC's aren't that great.But I do like their Wild Flares.Little pricey,but they wear good and good in the rain and the tread is a flame pattern.Goes good with custom flame paint jobs.

sounds like a search war to me...

selecting what to search for is important.
searching for "Rear Tire Recomendation" I get nothing cause it's misspelt.
searching for "Tire" in just the title I get a 100 hits.
so play with the settings, click the "just 1 thread" button
and keep your search open by opening each one in separate tabs.

I switched to a 140/90 Dunlop D404 after my stock IRC and was so happy with how much better it felt, at least until it rained. My IRC always felt good in the rain and the Dunlop has always had this weird reaction to it. Like it grips and it won't slide out, but something always just felt off... but maybe that's just me.

Now that the tire has at least 10k on it, the center tread is just gone, and I won't ride in the rain with it because you really can feel how bad it is now. It's understandable at 10k, but it started feeling this way even before 10k, more like around 7k like Denim said.

I would buy one again which I might just because I know it's not a bad tire, but it always had a weird rain performance and got even worse after the 5-7k point which is probably unacceptable to many. But its a cheap tire so you can't expect too much.

I'm kinda in the same boat Drestakil, but from what I've researched on here I think the Dunlop D404 and Shinko 712 are the better "budget" tires. I would buy the Dunlop again too, don't let my above comments scare you from it.
There our a million others who know more than me on tires though so eventually you just have to go with your gut feeling because the tire debate will rage on forever lol.

Thanks for the replies, and I really don't want to start any kind of Tire War. I'll try the search function again because I was sure this topic had to have come up before.

If 6000 to 7000 is about average, I may go with the IRC's. Nothing really wrong with them, I just had it in my head for some reason that they should last longer.

It's not a war like the oil war so no worries. I think tires differ so much more because of rider habits as well so its even more subjective.
I do like the Dunlop better than the IRC I had, and the tread overall I think lasts longer on the Dunlop. The D's rain performance may just not last as long as it should. I think dry it feels more stable and grippy, so I think I would go with something else besides the IRC, especially for the price.
Now if your talking about getting the Wild Flares IRC then my comments mean nothing, I am only referring to the stock IRC.

There are plenty of tires that last longer than 7k which others will be able to help you with. I'm just too broke for them Sad

6 to 7k is average for the stock IRC's...
Most decent tires do better... Shinko, Kenda, Dunlop will go double that...
Metzlers will go a lot further, but they have too deep a tread... you'll have a huge flat spot from 16k on... plus they'll probably dry out and be unsafe unless you ride over 8k a year...
My rears wear out a lot faster than the fronts...(the lightweight torquemonster likes to scrub off tread)..

My current fav is the Shinko 712'S... nice meat, good sticky, lower unsprung weight than most... I expect 8 to 12k... and they're pretty cheap...
My Dunlop's were good when I bought them, but they seemed to harden up after just a couple years...
I have a Kenda on the front,.. it's okay but not as pretty as the Shinko..

... and pretty tires,... so important... right?...

Haha I'm sure it's good. I've read tons of good reviews about it and you know firsthand how the tire is. It does look pretty from what I can tell too.

Do you know if it "fills" the fender in nice? Like my Dunlop looks good inside my fender, but does anyone know what the Shinko looks like in comparison width wise? I know technically they are the same size but all tires are shaped different. Referring to 140/90 too, not 140/80.

I wanted a 150/90 but I didn't really feel like finding out my bike won't fit it, then have to grind into the swingarm that is already hollow. I'm sure it's safe but it seems like a potential rust problem especially since I live near the coast.

Thanks again for the info. Pretty much what I was looking for. The one thing IRC's have going for them is I know they'll fit. My bike still has the stock shocks and I've added saddlebag brackets so there's not a lot of extra room. I'd like to stay with 140/80 but if I do switch sizes, seems like I'd have to go smaller.

Pretty much ruled out Dunlops because of their reputation in the rain. At least from what I've read on here. Also ruled out IRCs because of experience with the originals. Shinko's seems to have a good price but is it available in 140/80 or would the 140/90s fit? Right now, I'm leaning toward Metzler ME 880.

It does look like the Suzuki LS650 does use some of the least expensive drive tires.

FWIW, I did find a lot more links on here with the Google search. Guess I'll use that first from now on.

Shinko 712F has over 7K miles on it and still has whiskers from the injection molding process. Dunlop K627 (obsolete and then some) from either 2004 or 1994 on the rear. Works fine, good dry traction, great wet traction.

A set of D404s that are actually Made in Japan or Made in USA will go well over 40K miles on bikes that weigh more and have over twice the rear wheel power. If you get one of the Made in Taiwan sets, you wasted your money, they always have a bad bead or warped sidewall.

Shinko is a surprisingly decent tire, but, you can't run enough air pressure to suit me. They have a sidewall max PSI in the 30s, and I prefer to run 40-42psi front and rear.

Step your tires down to 90/90-19F and 130/90-15R. The bike will actually handle...
