1987 Transmission

Is it possible to pull out the transmission and put one of the newer ones in. So I can have a 5 speed instead of the 4.

Yes...
...but,... might as well pull out the old motor, and put in a newer one...
...or,... sell the old bike and buy a newer one...

What I'm saying is 4 speeds is the least of your problems...
The difference is minimal...
I would either ride the hell out of it, and enjoy it, 'till it died... then buy a newer one...
...or, get a newer one...and sell, part out, or cannibalize the old one...

Rather than sink $500 in an $800 bike.... buy a newer one for $1200 to $1500... and get newer rubber, paint, tranny, bearings, etc...

...unless you happen to have a 5 spd sitting in your lap with nowhere to go... Huh...

Hmmm... no, can't fit a 5spd in a 4spd case.
ain't even worth trying to split the case.

but if you have a 5spd bottom end, the top end will transfer.

I had a 4 speed and now a 5 speed. On the top end there is not that much difference, I think only 500 rpm. I'd go back to a 4 speed actually if I had the choice.

Not even 500rpm... more like 200 or 300...

5th gear step is pitiful...

Yeah it looks like to much work. I just feel like the rpms are really high when doing 75. Plus when im doing 70-75ish and I let off I shoot a giant flame its great.

A 5 speed won't feel any better. Serow made a speed/RPM chart a while ago, and it's in the tech section.  There you can see just how little difference there will be.

IMHO, anything above 65MPH is about the "comfortable limit" for this bike.  Anything beyond that, and you can tell it's working hard. No worries though; she'll keep on pulling.  Wink

From the tech section. Both of these are estimated speeds with stock speedo and rear tire size.

I guess that means I'm no good anymore; I've got 4 more cylinders! '08 Yamaha FJR1300 and still '01 Savage

I think stock is 23.8 or so
140x90-15 is 24.9

26 is about as big as you can go w/out rubbing the swingarm.
and at speed you probably will.

I'll possibly be running a Firestone deluxe 400-18 on my CS-1, the diameter is 26.57. I'll be notching the arm myself. I was just wondering the gearing and speed differences I'll have different than stock.

yes, if you go the tech section and look up the 5 speed gearing chart you'll find one for your tire size.

the last chart is for a 130/70H-18 which is 25.165"

You'll have to adjust the values by 26.57/25.165 or add 5.6% to the speed.

They ryca tire is 25.16" diameter. Should I just give a fudge factor and add a few MPH to each number for the Firestone at 26.57"?  Smiley
