Blew a Fork Seal
07/24/14 at 13:00:58

My left hand fork tube blew a seal. Got it into the shop before any oil got on the disk brakes. Turns out the bushings are gone too so I am having both fork tubes done with new bushings and seals.

Man, that sucks.

But, it provides the opportunity to present one of my favorite jokes:

That's a shame.  I hope the shop doesn't charge you too much to do them. They really aren't too difficult, and the seal kit is only $13 from AllBalls racing bearings and seals.

Glad you are getting it fixed!

Bought Pokey in 2/98. Popped fork seals in 2/98. Bought replacement seals in 6/05. Gave them away in 2009. Fork seals still leak, lost maybe a 1/2 teaspoon in the 10 years it took me to get around to changing the fork oil...

Not sure if the seals on Sam leak or not, bike has fork boots.

Blew a Fork seal

In the summer of 2013, somewhere I managed to blow a Fork seal. It turns out there are bushings in the forks which need replacement as well. I am having the work done in a shop and they are delayed in getting the parts.
Anyone know how big a job this really is?

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut between the seat and the handlebars. Make sure yours isn't too tight or too loose.

They are most likely delayed in getting parts....because the bushings aren't really much of a wear item and most likely are not stocked by anyone.  They are bathed in oil, sealed from the environment, and I don't believe they tend to wear out.

It is common to replace seals....I don't believe it is very common to replace the bushings.  It doesn't look like it would be a big job once you had the $ 3.00 part.

Well it took about 5 weeks from taking in Ole Yellar to yesterday when the shop called to advise that the parts did come in and are installed.
Great news -
The boys in the shop were a bit sceptical about working on a 1988 bike but yesterday they were crazy enthusiastic about my Savage. I have owned her since 1999 - and I like it today as much as I did the day I bought the bike.
So the successful fork rebuild is terrific news

Be careful. The oil seeps down the folk leg and may get onto the disk brakes. You pull the brake and there is no braking.
That is why I had mine repaired.
