Newbie needs advice
07/20/14 at 09:29:44

Hi guys. First let me say all I know about a savage I have learned from this forum. Thank you for sharing.   I have a 97 with 9800 mi. When I take off from stop and lug the motor I can not avoid that loud piston slap. When I get to around 1800 to 2000 rpm  the noise is gone. What I would like to know is if I add STP high mileage oil treatment with zinc anti-wear agent ZDDP will it hurt the clutch. I use rotella T oil. Thank you in advance for your advice on this.

Last tiime I looked, STP said right on the label not to use with wet clutches.  Now, that has been probably 20 or 25 years ago.

Don't lug the engine. The noise you hear from lugging the engine is normal. It's trying to tell you not to do that.

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

No matter how I try to take off by giving it more gas and slipping the clutch I still get that noise. I have extra weight and drag of it being a trike. I have a DNA specialty trike axle with a 70 tooth pulley and it rolls very easy but I can not avoid that noise.

Justin I don't know how fast it goes idling, but I always keep the idle speed adjusted above 1000 rpm. I have put over 1000 mi. on this trike since I built it. If it is under a hard pull uphill it makes the slapping noise at anything under 1800 rpm in any gear. I have 195/50r 15 tires. They are 73in. in circumference. The stock tire is 77in. + 70 pulley so it lower geared than stock. I planned that way. I have a tach. so I am sure of the rpm.

I think you may have too much bike, and not enough engine...
...if it's slapping the way you describe,.. it won't last long...

Reducing the rear tire size would help lessen rolling resistance...
Otherwise, I'd look for a bigger bike to trike out...
