Battery not charging, regulator rectifier ok
07/19/14 at 11:58:59

Hey everyone, my battery shows 12.5V with engine off, then goes down to about 12.3 with engine running in idle, and around 12.4 when i rev it. I tried a different regulator and the same thing happens, so i ruled out faulty battery and faulty regulator, where do i go from there and how? I'd appreciate any help.

Sounds like what was going on with my 81 Honda.  I replaced the regulator and the stator, and still no charging.

It ended up being a broken ground wire in the wiring harness under the tank.  I had to take it to a shop to fix it because I suck at tracing wiring.

The wiring harness with the broken ground had 3 ground wires in it, which is why I couldn't figure out which one it was.

It was also about 1 inch in diameter (the wiring harness bundle), and completely wrapped in electrical tape.

This was very helpful, so... my ohm readings are around 1 and 2 ohms, so is the ground test... and the AC voltage readings with the engine running are around 3, 9 and 10V. They don't vary with the engine at high RPM either... so, replace stator then?

Thanks so much.

so ground to any of the stator wires is 0 to a couple of ohms?
then you got a short and you'll need to replace the stator.

Yup,.. bad stator...

Be aware,.. it's easy to get the starter gear washers mixed up when you are in there replacing the stator... (I did)...
...and, put a tiny bit of RTV around the rubber where the wiring exits the case...

You can buy an aftermarket stator much cheaper than factory,... but I would recommend using the factory gasket... if you can't reuse the old one...

Wait up... you know the harness that comes out of the stator? it looks like it had been touching the drive belt (or chain since i converted) ... and one of the yellow wires got exposed. That could have been causing a short, right? I had suspected that but i couldn't really see the wires until i pulled out the stator and harness. I'm gonna patch that up with some electric tape and give it another try just in case. Before i go shopping for a stator...

So i brought the stator to a guy who tested it, said it was fried, and got it re-coiled... or whatever it's called. I re-installed it, fired up, and it read about 13.8 Volts... Then the engine stopped and wouldn't start again. I pulled out the spark plug and tested the spark... when i hit the starter the plug only sparks once and then does not anymore. what could be going on now?

I would check the kickstand safety.....since you were down there messing around.  Bypass it at the connector behind the left side cover.

Disconnect the connector....and run a paper clip or jumper wire to connect the two wires that go back to the wiring harness.  You are fooling the system into believing the kick stand is up.

Thank you, one other thing... would it make any difference if that connector that goes up to the gas tank (neutral, high beam, turn signal indicators) is disconnected? The engine stopped when everything was in place, but then I removed the tank and that connector to check the spark, that's when i noticed it only fires once...  should I plug that back in and THEN try? or does it make no difference?
