Big Trouble Or Just Paranoia?
07/14/14 at 15:11:46
My engine has started making these loud hacking noises and I wonder if somebody could give me a clue of what it could be?
Thanks!

that sound is definitely different!
What year?
Whats the mileage?
Whats been done to the bike?
What was the last thing you did to the bike?
Sounds like the decompression valve stuck open but would it run..

It would probably run with the decomp activated but would be very low on power. It would probably burn the valves pretty quickly if ridden too.
Combustion gasses slipping by the valves when they shouldn't be can cause lots of damage.
Did it suddenly start or begin after you did something to the bike?
Check the decomp adjustment.
Can you isolate where the sound is coming from or is loudest?

Have you clicked the link and listened? If that's really what it sounds like, you're not paranoid. I'd be doing some real close listening to that thing and wouldn't be out riding till I had it fixed.

Decomp sounds like a good guess to me. Have you checked the exhaust for a leak? Could be as simple as tightening your header.

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

Be careful with this one.....don't get too aggressive with the header bolts. They should be no tighter than what you can do with a 1/4" drive ratchet with your palm on the pivot point of the wrench....not 2 fisted tightening. The header bolts are easily broken, and should be removed occasionally and anti-sieze applied.
You can check for exhaust leaks using an incense stick, a cigarette, or a match that is freshly extinguished and still smoking. While the bike is idling move the smoke around the exhaust and head and watch for the smoke to be blown (puffs) away from the exhaust. You might also check the head gasket....you could possibly be the first one to have a leaky head gasket.

A piece of skinny hose jammed in your ear helps.
A rod stuck in the hose makes listening to the motor guts a lot easier
When my wife gets a new stethoscope I keep the old one. A little bit of time and effort and, presto, mechanics stethoscope.

The year is 1998, it's gone 32 000 km. This Xmas I removed the muffler and replaced it with a Dyna Screaming eagle. I only changed the muffler and did not mess with carburator and jets. I also had a little oil leak from the cylinder and changed a caphead and it fixed it. The bike runs fine and it's only this last week the horrible sounds came. Bike still runs fine. Guess I just gotta open up and have a look.
