Told by local shop to pull key switch. "There may be a code on back of the switch."

Alas, not one there--or on the frame behind the switch.

Other than doing a Fred and Barney foot-peddle to get back on the road, what are my options?

The numbers are grey on a black body and are the opposite of conspicuous. it may be covered with dirt.
If the numbers have been removed or rubbed off, you could take the the ignition switch to a good locksmith and leave it with them to figure out how to cut a replacement. They may have to take out the tumblers and measure them. Perhaps give them the helmet lock instead.
I had to do this in the 1980s and I paid the locksmith $50 of 1980s money (about eight cases of beer).

Pull the ignition switch. There is a piece of black tape on the body/cylinder  of the switch. The ignition switch numbers are embossed on that piece of black tape.  You might need a bright light and magnifying glass to read them.

I just did this on my suzuki bandit 1200, ignition lock was a B*$£h to get out, it also had no numbers stamped anywere on it, take it too a good locksmith (someone who does automotive) and they should be able to make you a key,
I'm in the uk and to get 3 new keys (so i had spares) it cost me £60 which works out around $100,
i did get 3 keys though

It just looks like a piece of tape but the numbers are imprinted on the tape and you can't read them without a "side light" on the piece of tape. The code can also be found under the gas cap on some of the older bikes. My 86 had it there and the locksmith picked that sucker with disturbing ease. Then he cut me a couple keys in no time.
