Help/Challenge - Bobber Fender Passenger Seat
07/09/14 at 21:30:30

Hi.  I have this idea that I'm excited about, but need help with developing an execution plan.  I want to make a small passenger seat for my bobber out of a mexican style blanket and a leather belt.  Here is a picture of someone that did it for the full saddle.  I'm having a hard time brainstorming how I can attach it via a leather belt to a fender. Maybe I could mount a small rack on the fender and strap it to that? Or construct a small square solo seat that has a leather belt wrapped around it and mount the seat to the fender.

Depends on the fender. The ones I use are.Weld tabs on both sides of the fender for the belt to slide through.(Kind of like a belt loop). These fenders are thick and have flat sides and a flat spot to put a seat.Tractor Supply under 30 bucks.

I'm not sure if the bobber fender will support a person, but I was assuming so.  I bought a trailer fender from nothern tool and am working through ideas on how to mount it.  I am leaning toward mounting it to the swingarm so I can get it closer to the tire without risk of bottom out.  One mount with a bar and one tpb.  These are the two pictures that are similiar to what I'm going for.

Denim, thanks for the advice.  I'll include that in the pool of options.  I don't have the ability to weld, so options that avoid that are preferable, but I know some local shops that I'm sure could make that happen if I decide to go that route.

I really dont think it will hold if its going to be a rigid.  One pothole and a 100 lb girl on the back is gonna bend or taco it.  Id run some inconspicuous mounts from the frame or something.

Spammy, I'm considering running mounts from the frame with spacers, but thought that creates a problem with bottoming out.

Thanx.I'm flattered since both of those pics are my bikes.LOL.If you're going to keep the shocks and swingarm mount it,your girl won't ride with you very long. That is worse than making it a rigid for her.But just put a fender brace from the axle to the fender.I made mine rigid for 2 up and this is how I did it.And it's working very well.I frame mounted mine and put the sissybar on to support the rear of the fender.

Here it is with struts in place.

Riding a padded unsprung fender vs. a sprung fender has got to be less comfortable.

I apologize for lack of clarity.  I'm not going hard tail.  The pictures above I was just looking at the style of the rear fender, not necessarily how they are mounted.  I plan on running struts.  Further, I'm not overly concerned with comfort.  I don't imagine having a passenger on this set up for more than 30 mins.

I thought you were keeping shocks. That's why I said it how I did.But even with shocks,if you're mounting the fender to the swingarm.Put a sissybar or struts on it. on it

my .02 cents:

if you are going the strut route, I would just mount the fender to the upswept seat bars/horns, the same as the stockfender is mounted to. then lower the rear as low as you can and make struts that length. that way you get a solid mounting point, a low fender, and a low bike

I feel like this thread is heading in the direction of fender mounting and here's a post I just did specifically for the subject.

I appreciate all the help.
