Yeah, they do that, even with the carb mods. If it runs good, don't worry about it. Mine still backfires a little between shifts if I run it up the RPMs.

If you hold the throttle open just a tiny bit while you pull the clutch in, and don't let the throttle grip go completely closed, you can cut way down on the backfires while you shift gears.
The same is true for deceleration - hold the throttle just a tiny bit open, not enough to cause the bike to accelerate....and the backfires will be reduced. You might have to use just a bit more brake as the engine will do a little less compression braking.

If you're shifting late, you're probably having fun. Learn to go clutchless in the gears above 2nd. You can slap the gas off and grab a gear before it has Time to fart
Second to first is just too much...but the rest, shifting up or down, can easily be done with out your clutch.

Any tricks to doing that? I used to do it in my VW's but you had to hit a sweet spot in the RPMs.

start with 4th to 5th gear, the rpm difference is only 500 so just a slight blip of the throttle and a little up pressure you've changed gears.
Be carefull, if you press hard, you'll change gears w/out blipping the throttle.
when you get the hang of that, try the others.

Cool... so basically get the RPMs moving upward when you hit the shifter. I can do that if I'm not chewing gum.

RE:

Is it hard on the equipment to do that?
It is
fun
to do...just put a little up pressure on the gear shifter, let off the throttle, let 'er slip right into the next gear.
But I'd hate to be doing long term damage.

I had actually been meaning to ask about cluchless shifting.
Am I to understand that there is no damage done if preformed correctly? It deoesn't seem like it is disagreeable to the bike when I am doing it.

Boldly going forward cause I can't find reverse!
