Trouble shooting guide suggestions

I've wanted to do this for some time and it always comes in fits and stops.  structure has always been iffy but I think I've worked out the basics.  and it'll always be a work in progress and a group effort.

I've created a thread called "Trouble shooting guide" in the tech section.
we'll discuss how-to in here and we'll mod/lock the guide.

In the guide, we'll list the symptoms and link solutions as separate posts...
such as "won't start" will link to another with another list of symptom or causes.
finally we'll link a solution.

for me, hitting a link opens a new tab, so if it leads to a dead end, it'll be easy to go back and try a different branch, if there is one.

Trouble shooting guide

thinking out loud is what I'm looking for... this may even evolve into a help thread as we work out all of the possibilities for each symptom.

Looking forward to it dave.

For pulley noise... would say it's a clunk clunk... or something else?

I thought mine might be camchain... (sounded like a dog-choker dragged  across the engine case)-- best approximation I could give...
... or sometimes, just a tick...
...but, either way... it's cadence follows rear wheel rotation...

"card in the spokes" type noise, cadence follows wheel rotation.

Some low speed engine deceleration on a long slow downhill makes the best test case because you can hear the frequency change as the bike slows down.   Actuating clutch cuts the noise off, reengaging brings it back.

Suspicion of a loose pulley should cause an instant re-torque.

Now that we Raptor regularly as a prevention and put in a Slavy on the cam chain regularly at 13-15,000 miles this "loose pulley eat the splines" has become the #1 killer of engines.*    This is verified by the Ryca folks since their chain mods have even less spline engagement compared to our wider pulley engagement.

Oil usage increases as the miles build on The Oil. Check oil often as you familiarize yourself with the bikes thirst and ability to make oil disappear. The closer you get to time to change the faster the oil goes away.

Ryca issues stem from the swing arm angle due to the longer shocks , adjustment of belt or chain properly is hard , easier with belt cause it has some give to stretch alittle , but with chain a tensioner is needed. I had to buy one and fab it on the Ryca .

For us poor unlucky guys that have to put our bikes away (snow birds)I've always filled my gas tank and added stabilizer ,but it seems that I have formed a slight bit of rust on the inside of my tank anyway, but I found the key(way) ,which vents the tank (unless you have the CA model)so  I cover the opening with a piece of clear packing tape on the gas cap.

That's a good daily hot tip, I've noticed a vapor trail on the gas cap coming from the keyway when I truck my beast acrost country to the meetings.  I'll have to remember to pack some tape.
