Kuryakyn 6240 grips

Has anyone used these? I thought I read somewhere that this is the one best suited for the s40(2005). But after I slipped the stock grips off I noticed that the throttle tube has ribbing and a raised neck and these ISO grips, as far as I can tell, expect a smooth tube. Do I have to replace the tube as well? If anyone has experience with them I would appreciate the advice.

I can't comment on the grips.....However I am certain that you are not going to find an alternate "tube". The Savage is a low production motorcycle and aftermarket folks don't make many parts for it.

Most grips sets are made to accept the larger right throttle tube, as motorcycles all have a throttle on the right side. Grips made for ATV's are both the same size, as the use a thumb throttle.

I suppose you could file or sand off a bit of the ribs if they caused a problem. I have found that WD40 works really well for installing most rubber grips. It allows them to slide on easily, and when the WD40 solvents dry the grip is nice and tight. Letting the bike sit in the sun speeds up the process considerably.

The only issue I had was that they put the throttle adjustment cable at it's limit.

grip for the throttle side has a larger inside diameter (than the
left hand grip) so that it slips over the existing throttle tube.

Your response seems to indicate that the tube was integral
to the grip; hence the change in your throttle adjustment cable.

Are the differences due to the manufacturer or part numbers of
the grips I would order ?

Many replacement grips are metal, and the throttle cable hole is part of the casting. You want this kind or a metal replacement throttle tube.

The cheap chintzy white plastic throttle tubes are used because they cost the OEMs pennies. I've had my 2003 Savage since mid-April, have already replaced the tube once (with a Harley Davidson sourced part) and it needs to be replaced again. ALL the OEMs that use white plastic throttle tubes get them from the same source (Taiwan). They are junk, but if you want to reuse yours, sand off the ribbing.

With the arthritis in my hands (fingers are starting to seriously curve), I find ISO and other fat grips horribly uncomfortable. The swell built into Gran Turismo or similar 1960s/70s touring grips lets my hands relax naturally. You can get new GT grips for our bikes from Ryca, run you $12 or so plus any "shipping and fondling" fees.

My stock grips got swapped out for Italian sport touring grips in the first week or two of ownership, and those fancy grips have already been destroyed by the climate here in SW Tennessee. Chunks missing from the too soft, not UV stable rubber... Angry

Go to a bike shop that carries aftermarket grips. Try your hand on several styles and decide what is actually comfortable for you. Grips are like seats, what I like may be agony for you, and vice versa.

I hadn't considered how much difference there could be
between the "hand fit" of different grips.
I have extra large hands and the stock grips on my S40
are not comfortable for long rides.
I'll visit the local stealership and try various grips with
my gloves on hand.

Depending on the maker, I wear a 3x-5x glove, and 13EE-15EEEEE boots. The Savage is a teeny tiny cute little toy motorbike... my 8 year old grandniece wants one. Grin

Anyone think I'm kidding? Seat is at my knees with stock shocks...

...and those are 13.5 inch rise handlebars... Like I said, teeny tiny toy motorbike.
