My Busted Tranny

Savage Pros, I could use your advice.  During my ride last Sunday I suddenly lost the ability to shift beyond second gear (making the ride home painful & very slow).  I can go between first and second with some difficulty, but it feels like I’m hitting a brick wall if it try to shift into third.  Sounds expensive or a PITA to dive into a transmission repair, but I’m heading in that direction.

So, my question for the group: As long as I’m going to go as far as splitting the crankcase, what else should I do as part of the teardown or rebuild?  I’ve already fixed the leaking head cap and done the Verslagen upgrade.  Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Savage tranny problems are very rare... before you go in,.. inspect your linkages very closely...
Especially check that the shift rod hasn't bent... (we've seen this happen a lot)...
Best luck... Wink...

Also check that the pivot point on the shift pedal up by the footpeg is free to move.  Those get lots of front tire crap thrown at them.

I seem to be having a similar problem too.  Sometimes (not always) I can't downshift beyond 3rd or 4th.  I'm running Rotella T and it's toppped up to the full mark.  Bike only has 3500 miles.  Thoughts?

Sorry to hijack your thread.

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

Take a look under the left side of the motor just behind the footpeg and make sure the shift rod is not bent.

The rod appears to be straight and clean.  I don't see any signs at all of any damage whatsoever.  Is there anything that might need to be adjusted?  Am I just chasing a gremlin that was, ummm, "designed", by the bean counters at Suzuki to cut a few manufacturing costs?

you're the victim of the PO.
who's heavy foot has damaged the shifting mech.
I've never been in there, but there have been a few.
there's a cover on the left side under the pulley that you can pull.
beware, there are things that'll move when you open it.
