BMV's Motorcycle Written Test in Ohio
06/20/14 at 05:41:59

I passed my BMV written test for motorcycle here in Ohio. (40 questions, 75% required, 11 missed = failure.)

I didn't study the book, but I did a review questions at http://driving-tests.org/ohio/ohio-motorcycle-permit-practice-test/ which has mostly motorcycle safety questions, and a few general drunk driving questions.  Since I had previously passed a motorcycle written (lapsed from 30 years ago) and I was getting 95% on the six online tests, I felt comfortable making a pilgrimage to the BMV in town.

Unfortunately for me, the first salvo of questions were pedantic administrative and legal stuff that only my attorney should care about if I ever go full retard and drink/drive. At almost half way to 100, I don't think I'm gonna start motoring with whiskey on my breath.

The test began and kept hammering questions about the precise nature of sentencing for drunk driving.  Exactly how many hours one spends in jail. Exactly how long a license is suspended. Exact fines.  I just didn't know those things. Still, being that the test is computerized and interactive, it just kept pestering me about all this legalese. By the time I got to 9 questions, I had 6 wrong.

Dagnabbit! I had a sinking feeling in my gut.  I should have studied the legal part of the book. I can only miss 4 more in 31 questions before failure.

At 20 questions, I had missed 9. I'm nearly certain that I'm going to go away from the BMV a failure. But I must have finally satisfied the snarling "legal beagle" interactive requirements, and the computer finally started asking safety related questions that I knew.

I missed one safety question, and I think the State is wrong. They presented a picture of three motorcycles around a car. One is behind, one is beside in the car's blind spot, and one motorcycle was half a motorcycle length in front of the tailgating car. The question asked which cycle was in the most danger. Being tailgated at 4 feet, in my humble opinion, is the biggest danger, but the answer was the cycle in the next lane, next to the car in its blind spot. Hoooookay.

Results: 10 questions missed, 75%. Passed, by the skin of my teeth. Just like in the movies!

As dad would say, "Good enough for government work." Smiley

Take home points for fellow Buckeyes:
• Online practice tests, at least the free ones for cheapskates like me, aren't adequate to the real thing, even if you appear brilliant.
• Study the legal stuff and know every nitpicking detail, including precise sentencing guidelines.

I definitely agree with BalingWire.  When I took my test in '07, it was about 70% legal and 30% bike related.  Luckily, most of the legal stuff on mine was common sense.

The one positive is they stop the test as soon as you get a passing grade.  I had 7 or 8 I really didn't know the answer too so I guessed and got 2 right to pass.  Cool

I'm also from Ohio and when I went to take my written test they gave me the one for a temporary drivers license.  I couldn't figure out why there were no motorcycle questions on it at all.

Ohio is a great state to be from - - - FAR away from! I should know - I am. And I am certain the feeling is mutual. But on a lighter note, you can cruise down the road with your tresses in the breeze, we here in Washington still have to wear a DOT approved skid lid. We can legally smoke MaryJane now, tho! Shocked Go figure.

My wife will be taking the riding portion of the
test here in Ohio next month.
I'd like to chalk out a practice course for her
in a parking lot nearby.
I've searched for a diagram of the test course
that shows dimensions but haven't found one
anywhere on the internet.
Does anyone have the dimensions ?
