Thinking about buying a 86 savage

Hi

I've tried to use the search function to see if I found the answer, but no luck. I'm thinking about buying a '86 Savage, built into a bobber. However, that's 28 years. Is it starting to get so old that I should just stay away from it and put more money into the buy and get a newer one?

The bike I'm looking at is this. The ad is in Nowegian, so I'll translate what it says

- New tires
- Starter has been overhauled
- New grips and footrests
- New backlight, rear fender, license plate holder and solo seat
- New Mirror
- New motor/ gear oil and oilfilter
- New battery
- Parked indoor/garage

This is among the least expensive there. I'm thinking it might be more well kept than the standard Savages on the site as it has custom stuff done to it.

Yes, it's 28 years old, but what's the mileage?
other than that, it's old rubber parts that are about to give up, and corrosion on everything else.

'86's are a odd duck, 1st year. They changed the wiring, left footpeg mount the next year. 10 years later they went to 5 speed and added a torque limiter on the starter because on shutdown the piston can kickback on the last stroke and bust starter teeth or worse.

Hey!

First off, sorry for the late reply. Real life stole all my time.

Thanks for the replies. Someone else ended up buying it or the seller took the ad down.

I'll start reading the buying thread right away. All of the other posts linked in the thread are things I should read through as well, as I am not a very good with a wrench. Never had the interest with cars. Thanks again, that post is a goldmine the more I read through it.

If you are patient you WILL find a great deal. I've come across several and got my current bike with under 2000 miles and well maintained for under 2K. I've seen several others that, if I had the cash, I would have bought and modified and sold for a tidy profit.

Not so sure Craigslist works so well wherever he is located.....if the bike he is considering is listed in Norwegion.....does that mean he is in Norway? Some areas of the world have a bit less availability than we do in the US. Here in the Cincinnati area the Savage is readily available on Craigslist - although the asking prices seem to be a bit high.

I paid 800 for this.The guy was asking 1200.Needed 2 new tires,new handlebars and a new left side switch assembly.Paint work,turnsignals...etc.I sold it(in the middle of winter) and about broke even.Needed money. Turned it into this.
