Today I changed the chain tensioner thanks to Versy.

The hardest part was the little spring clip. It bounced about 20 feet away and yet by the Grace of God I manged to find it.

The original plunger had a toothpick's width left on it. Amazing.

Now, I replaced the gasket and put a thin layer of gasket sealant but it's leaking on the bottom.

I used a torque wrench and never got to 10-ft lbs as they were feeling snug but I started to sense they were getting tight. My wrench is 1/2 inch drive that I had to convert down to 1/4. They still could turn but I was getting weary.

Is it possible to over-tighten the bolts on the cover? Should I give them a little more turn?

That should be fine.  It's better to leak a bit of oil than try to dig out whatever is left when it breaks.

Putting a 1/4 adapter on a 1/2" ratchet doesnt a 1/4" ratchet make. PLayin with fire,,Use an end wrench or 1/4" ratchet. A torque wrench set at the low end or high end of the scale isnt to be trusted. Trust your hand & experience. Sounds like you chose good sense over "I HAVE to make it stop leaking".

Late to the party here, but if you don't use antiseize compound, you can't be sure the 10ft-lbs will be applied to the cover.
