Question on front brake overhaul
06/15/14 at 16:57:23
About 4-5 weeks ago I replaced the front brake hose, rebuild the master cylinder and rebuilt the Caliper. I noticed that I am still seeing very small amount of brake fluid on the rubber cap on the inside and a little bit around the rubber strap that holds the cap on. The last time I did a brake job was on my 1999 Yamaha Virago 535 about 2-3 years ago and I was not sure if this is normal until all the brake fluid inside the bleeder valve works its way out. There is no drop of fluid in the master cylinder, no spongy feeling and nothing that makes me think there is a problem. Am I correct in assuming that the remainder of the fluid needs to get out of the bleeder and this is normal or no? Bike is 2006 with 10,500 miles on it.
Thanks, S40 Guy.

Not normal. Your bleeder screw should not be leaking. there isn't any fluid
in
the bleeder. It's just a screw with a hole through it to let fluid/air out of the caliper when it's loosened. Make sure it's tight. If it is tight and still leaks then the bleeder is damaged, or there is something in the hole it threads into that is keeping it from seating properly.
Try taking it all the way out, make sure there is nothing stuck to the bottom where it seats in the hole, let a little fluid drip out of the hole, and put it back in.

I ordered some Speed Bleeders that I will install when I get them later this week. I removed the bleeder and saw nothing bad inside so I assume that it must be the bleeder. 2006 with 10,500 miles on it. Other than the last 10 months much of her life was outdoors. When not is use now she stays in the garage. Saw some pretty good reviews on the speed bleeders for future ease of brake bleeding maintenance on the S40. Anyone else try the speed bleeders? S40 guy.

I tried them, but they don't work on an empty system. In fact nothing works on an empty system. So I pulled them and left the stock one in.
Might be OK on a full system.
