cam chain and cam chain tensioner
06/15/14 at 14:14:52
I plan on replacing my cam chain tensioner and possibly the cam chain as well. Wondering if it'd be smart to do the chain while I'm doing the tensioner and if I should how hard would it be and how long would it take?

Just the tensioner, requires removing the sidecase only...
Chain and tensioner is much more involved... you have to remove the sidecase and the top head cover...
I assume you either have over 10k miles on your bike, or you have measured your tensioner extension and it's beyond 17mm...
PS.. (the tensioner doesn't stretch, the chain does)so, just replacing the tensioner with a new one,.. won't fix anything,
...unless you buy a modded one from Verslagen here on the site, in the Marketplace...
His have an extended plunger and a pinned shaft...
That will double your chain life...

If you want to go OEM, you have to replace the chain. Tensioner is fine.
Get Versy's tensioner. It costs a little more than the stock one but won't destroy your engine and will get you twice the life out of your chain.

Public service announcement: The last couple cam chain tensioner threads are why folks need to post to the forum about issues and fixes BEFORE ordering parts and tearing stuff apart. Unless you have money laying around doing nothing, this forum can save you a LOT of time, grief and money. It's an awesome place with folks that are more than willing to help out us noobies.

Usually the tensioner is fine. Sometimes theyre worn oblong inside. The chain can run longer by modding the tensioner. Id start with an ext6ended tensioner, wring all the miles out of the chain, AND give you time to learn a bit more about the bike before you hafta go diggin that deep. Unless your tensioner is messed up, Id try to return the new one,

You can't return it, since anything for a Slopoki Salvage is "special order"... At least that's how it was in TN and WA with my 98. Haven't (and won't) get anything for the 2003 from the local stealerships. Rip off artists of the highest order. If I need factory stuff, that is what Bike Bandit is for, order get's to the front door at the house faster than the factory warehouse can ship it to the dealership. And it usually costs less to boot...

On the bright side.. a stock tensioner costs less than 1hr of service time at a dealership...
Fixing your own bike, is still cheaper than paying a dealer... and, you learn about your bike...
It's a good feeling to know your bike...

Well the good news is......you now have a new tensioner that you can send to be modified. And I believe Verslagen is making deals on trade in tensioner cores.
