Yep, it you switch to "prime" and it runs fine, then your petcock is dying. Get a Raptor 660, DO NOT buy anything that costs under about 15-20.00, 99% it's a knock off. If you have a Yamaha dealer in town just shell out the 20 bucks and buy it there, you're almost there with shipping from an online dealer anyway. It's a direct bolt in, no mods, you can do it with the tank on, takes about 5 minutes, and it makes taking your tank off a heckuva lot easier for future maintenance. Leave off the inline fuel filter between the petcock and carb if you have one.

Read the posts in the current topic "Liquid gasket", there's links there to Ron Ayers online parts to the right part.

Hot tip....run your tank almost dry before you try to change it. Less gas to transfer/spill.

I changed my '96 OEM petcock for the Raptor 660 and the bike runs a lot better. Didn't bother with testing it. For $25, I will gladly replace a 18 year old valve containing rubber vacuum parts with an all metal valve.

Good luck!

Yamaha part 5LP-24500-01-00. Mine was about $25 at a Suzuki dealer.

I ordered a Yamaha Raptor 660 pet thingy valve from a Dealer tonight. $29.00 plus S&H + tax.

Right now I don't have to switch it to Prime. Just move it back to reserve then back to run.

That is a failed selector plate in the fuel valve. It is slipping out of alignment, getting hung up in between settings. Once you install the Raptor unit, tear the factory one apart and look for a burr, with a corresponding groove in the black part with the holes in it. Common as dirt, many an Intruder 800 went to the junkyard over that before the factory recalled and replaced a failed run of fuel valves.

Oh, I believe you guys know what your talking about. Just wish Suzuki would figure out how to build one that works fault free. I just love the OEM part when it is working as it should.

I believe the petcock worked pretty darn good......until ethanol fuel came along.  The ethanol fuel is really hard on diaprhagms and rubber parts.

Not sure how the pet thingy valve ended up on the subject line?

petcock (one word) is OK but if you put a space between pet and the other part, software installs "thingy" in there  Wink
