tail light ryca wiring
06/01/14 at 21:51:27

Hey gang,
In my readings here, I've noticed that many have said the ryca taillight works but isn't super bright. Gyrobob did a LED add-on I thought was pretty nice but was wondering about the wiring hookup. Below is a quick drawing. Can anyone tell me if this is the correct way I should add on brake and tail lights? Thanks!

Your wiring looks correct to me.

I did not believe the RYCA tail light with built in turn signals did an adequate job of keeping me safe in daytime - especially when the sun is shining on the back of the bike.  I went to eBay and bought the same style tail light without the turn signals and used real turn signals.  I also supplemented my brake light with an LED strobe light that is set to run continuous.  I had to put a piece of red tape over the Strobe unit as it was so bright it would make you see blue spots!

I feel much safer now.

Dave

That sounds great Dave. I'll have to start scanning ebay for those taillights. Do you worry about the back tire hitting it? I'll be running a Firestone 400-18 front and rear on mine.

The LED brakelight is tucked way up under the seat and out of the way of the tire....it is mounted to a bracket that is attached to the back of the metal seat pan.  You can't see the light when walking around the bike - unless you are about 20 feet behind.

Here is where I got mine.  It is not the cheapest in town - it is about the smallest that is this bright.

One other light I was considering was the PIAA rear fog light - but it wasn't any cheaper and had a larger housing.

I was also considering this...with some kind of red lense applied.  I used these in my turn signals and they are very bright.

Cool Dave. When you have the light set so it just stays on and not strobes, correct? (But only during braking or always on?) Got a video of it? Would love to see it.

It is illegal to have the red light flashing.....but it seems OK for those modulators that flash it a couple of times before it comes on steady.

The strobe I used has about 20 different settings....and one of them is steady.  It does make a quick flash before it comes on continuous.

This is where I have mine mounted on the back of the rear seat mount.  I made a tab that drops it down about an inch below the mount that bolts to the original seat mounts.  It is out of the way of the tire, it has red tape on it so that it is not blindingly bright.

Yes...mine is red/red.

In the US.....red/red is the only thing that is legal for a rear running light or brake light.

I do have a yellow/white for the front that is hooked up to the passing switch to alert drivers at intersections when I am not sure they see me - but that is a different story.
