I hooked the battery charger to the battery terminals and the lights came on with the key in the on position. So I removed the battery and topped it off with distilled water. I now have  it on the charger with the caps off.
I briefly removed the positive charger cable to take a voltage reading a few minutes ago and it read 13.6 volts.

I have it on the charger now while I work on replacing a drive belt on the riding mower. I am struggling remove a "C" clip in order to lift a pulley.

I rode the bike to Harbor Freight yesterday to buy a ring clip remover,

but it doesn't fit....it was the only one they sell. The bike ran fine then, it was after I returned and decided to make beer run.

That's when the problem started.  Sad

One quick note, the lights go out when you hit the starter button because the bike is designed to do that. They come back on when the bike starts up.  From experience, a battery can go dead in a click. Mine started just fine, I went to a gas station to fill it up then nothing, nada, nil when I went to start it after filling up.

I definitely think it sounds like a battery issue.  Is it the factory battery?  How long was your ride to HF?  I'd be willing to bet that if you hooked up your voltmeter to your battery and watched it while trying to start the battery, the voltage takes a huge drop.

Hopefully charging and topping your electrolyte provides some relief. Likely time for a new battery, though.

Did you get your bike running yet? Sure sounds like the starter relay to me. I would take a large screwdriver and short it across the two large terminals on the starter relay and see if your starter engages that way. If starter works then verify your getting 12 vdc to the starter relay coil terminals when you go thru a normal start attempt. If the starter relay is getting 12 vdc to the coil terminals but starter is still not engaging/turning on then replace the starter relay. EBay has some generic ones that should work fine.

If the dog had died and my woman left me driving my 97 Chevy pick up, the song could have became a country hit.

Nah... modern country: The wife tries to take your dog and the pickup and the dog bites your wife and comes home with her purse with all your credit cards in it.  Grin
