Savage won't start
06/01/14 at 08:46:49

Went for a ride yesterday, came home, parked, 20 minutes later bike wouldn’t start. It’s a 2007 Savage.

Turned the key on, neutral light was on. When I turned it to the start position, I heard a laud click, the neutral light when out (so did the headlight), and nothing.  It does not try to turn over, just the one laud click.

This morning I checked the battery, it reads 12.6 volts, I checked the main fuse, it’s okay. I checked the 2 yellow relay fuses, they are okay.

Any suggestions?

We have 3 fuses?... Huh...
I thought we only had 2...

Sure sounds like fuse blew... Did you check them with a meter or just eyeball?...

I use two leads attached to both of my nipples, one to each side of the suspected component. Not sure of its accurate, but I know it sure is fun  Kiss

Meter ....  0 ohms

There are 2 yellow relay fuses....one is probably a spare.

Did you try jumping it with another battery ? A reading of 12.6V with no load on the battery doesn't really tell you very much. If that's the original battery in an 07 it's getting kind of old. Wouldn't be the first time a battery just up and croaked with no warning.

If the battery became weak 20 minutes after a ride, wouldn't it at least attempt to turn over?
.....and why would the lights go out as soon as the starter button is pushed?

MMMkay,, check the battery voltage by grounding your meter on the starter body. That way youll see if you have a crappy ground between, well,, you do that math,,

AND, Hit the starter, hold that button for just a few seconds & grab around the ground on the case, any pertinent connectors. IF you have a resistive connection, it will get hot with current flow thru it.,.
Is the starter even TRYING? Have ya pulled the plug to see if itll spin it over w/ no load?
Id wait on that one,, BUt check batty V while youre pushing the Go button,, Thats a real telling thing,,

Yep,, I read that too,, & then I completely disregarded it & went off the track,,

He rode it, parked it, went out & shazzam,, sheza no wanna play,,,

Awwrite, Neutral lite is out,, Put the stand up, even if youre in neutral,
No go? Bypass the clutch switch, dont make a science project out of it, this is just troubleshooting, a piece of paper clip will do fine,

HMM,, Dangitt,, I just spotted that
He never even got TO hitting the starter button again,,

Well,, What gets activated with the key just on? If he heard a Pop & the N lite went out, then what about the diodes in the kickstand circuit?

Weak.. yeah. But it also could have gone from OK to junk too. One click and then Nada. It happens.

I cant picture a battery failure so complete it stops liting the N lite, yet, shows 12.6Volts.. but then the projector that creates my mental images has been giving me troubles lately.,.,
& Ive done run plumb OUTTA film for my photographic memory! Dangitt,, Anyone know where I can get some?
