Battery

OK, A used 06, S-40, Bought with 5500 miles. Starts runs, just fine. Looks like PO did little routeen maintenance.  So now doing/checking little things.
My experience is, when using a Starter, (in any ICE), it should not dim the other things that are on.
In this case, the bike starts just fine. But, the headlight, 'dims' when the starter is pushed.  So I added to my mental list of things to do. "New Battery".   Then I thought, ask!.  Is this a normal thing for the S-40, or, does it need a new Battery. I am guessing the Battery is the original one, and about 8 years old.  Thanks.

Are you sure about that?  I just looked through the wiring diagram, and did not see anything that indicated the headlight is switched off when the starter button is pushed.

The headlight dims or cuts off completely when you use the starter?  It should turn completely off.

Newer models have a headlight cutout... mine don't... Huh...

The headlight dimming a little is normal... if it dims to nothing and then the starter slows down... you have a battery problem...

Id bet youre fine,, even tho I must admit, I DO like to put a new battery in a used vehicle IF I have any question in my mind of the battery's health. The cost of a battery is nothing compared to being stranded..But it sounds like youre is healthy,, You could put a meter on & hit the starter & see what the voltage drops to,,

OK, did this: Started, and the headlight/driving lights, turned off.
Then hit the 'kill' switch, the light stayed on, but when I press the starter button, they went off.
So I conclude, (at least on this one), their is a 'cut off' switch, for the lights, when the starter button is used.
As it starts in, 3/4 to 1-1/5 sec, (hot/cold).

Again,  Smiley
Love the information, so specific to the S-40's
