weird electrics-brake flashes with l/r signals
05/11/14 at 19:25:51

Friend worked on my bike and got it back with weird electrics problem.  When you use either signal the front and rear  flash twice as fast as usual and the brake light comes on in between the flashing of the turn signals.  Any quick ideas before I dive into the wiring?

Yea, take it to your friend & make him show you exactly what he did,,& look for pinched wires. I wouldnt touch it till he has hands on it,,The last guy to mess with something can often find the bug.

He pinched the harness, causing a short. Very common problem. I swapped to red rears on mine, run/turn, had to add a separate ground wire to the mounting point (license plate holder) or they wouldn't light up.

The factory wiring is rather, um, let's just say... delicate. Yeah, that's the word, delicate.

Which is polite speak for substandard too light useless junk. Doesn't take much for it to break.

in addition to pinched wires, remember a missing ground connection can cause a circuit to seek it's own ground, causing all kinds of ghosts in the machine

Ok I have no more time to look for this.  It'll have to go to the end of the line.  At least it runs and as long as it stays on a Battery Tender
whenever it's
not running I'm good.  However, what to do if I camp on the weekend?  Could take off the p
os or neg cable but any other suggestions?
As I type this everything is fine but the preview and probably the post are all screwed up.  Anybody know what's happening here?

Did he put LED blinkers on your bike? or LED bulbs?
If so you will not really have to do anything, unless you want to put an electronic flasher relay in place of the flasher relay on the bike.
Its located under the tank on the right front, little 1" square black thing.

No LEDs anywhere. Tha
nks for trying, but your reply doesn't address the issue, alternative ways to stop the battery drain overnight when no battery tender available.

Get your battery load tested at an auto parts store. Sounds like you have a cell that has sulfated out or has a broken plate.

Looks like you had 2 issues get merged into one...  Huh

Have you run your wiring harness yet to look for damage? A dead short in a damaged wire will kill a battery as well as causing turn signal issues. The Savage/S40 electrical system as shipped from the factory isn't very good. Think 1975 Yamaha w/o lighting coils... in other words, a direct knockoff of late 60s and early 70s Lucas (Prince of Darkness, let the smoke out of the wires and burn the bike to the ground with no warning) Brit bike parts. Every other issue with a Savage/S40 is an easy fix, but the "eclectrical" system is a whole other nightmare.

I lost the entire system on my 98 to the decomp relay internally shorting. So my custom in the making is now nothing more than a glorified parts roach.  Angry

Kuri:

If you continue to ride the bike without finding and correcting the
problem.....you are likely to cause more damage.  And some of it could become expensive.

Take the time to find the problem....and fix it.

Already load tested battery and ok.  Haven't gone thru whole harness yet but nothing obvious showing up.
