The reason is that the extra brightness seems to hide/mask the turn signals, making them harder to see. I like big, bright turn signals that are hard for other drivers to overlook.
The headlight on my Vulcan 800 is rubber mounted and tends to vibrate a bit, causing a it to appear to be flickering to oncoming drivers. I have not tried to stop the vibration because it is really does get one's attention. Kind of a poor man's modulator, but operating at a higher frequency than modulators. I generally don't drive a night so I don't notice it myself while riding.
Are my ideas just plain silly, or is there some merit to them.
I know when I'm in a car I see the "modulated headlights" better than I do the steady beams. I'm not as concerned about the turn signals as I am just being seen coming head on. I don't think you'd need huge "side lights" just something that is not your standard single headlight so people notice you.
