head gasket????
05/06/14 at 04:14:26

Can anyone tell me how to change the gasket that is where the jug splits. The manual says to measure the rods and cups. I'm pretty good with mechanics but a little nervous on this one.  Thanks in advance.

Measure rods and cups?  What bike are You working on?

What issue are you having?  Chances are your head gasekt is fine.....these bikes don't blow head gaskets as the compression (and power) are very low.  If you are having oil leakage problems...it is most likely the head plug, the nut on the head stud directly under the exhaust header, or a loose bolt on the head cover that has a sealing washer under it.

We have seen several mechanics condemn the head gasket. I dont remember that ever being correct.

Its leaking right where the jug splits kinda towards exhaust.  It stated the spacing between the valves or something I read it briefly then got discouraged.  The guy I bought it from used some kind of paint stripper to get the paint off and he said he lighted melted the gasket its small but it blows all over my pant leg

You need to clean the gunk off, and then dry everything off and look for the leak.  The head gasket won't be ruined by paint stripper....it won't penetrate down into the head gasket.

Most likely you have a the famous plug leak.....and it is simpler than than fixing the head gasket.

Here is where you can find the Table of Contents with links.

http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1181745927

Go down to the Engine section....and you can find several threads about it.

You can also use the "search" box located in the upper right hand corner of any page you are on.  You can also just look through several pages in the Rubber Side Down section....this topic comes up just about every week.

For newbies,, remember, any time youre gonna pull the spark plug, ya need to blow the crud out of the pit it sits in, else grit will fall in the cylinder & score up the cylinder walls. If that means buying a can of keyboard cleaner air, then so be it,,
