I don't know how some of you squeez-in the 140/90 because I could not get it to fit in there, what trick are you doing?  (stock rear is 140/80)

Tire widths vary with the mfr
and if you add bag supports on the inside of the fender, it ain't gonna work with stock bolts.
You can use button head allen bolts to gain a lot of room and make occasional scuff inconsequential.

do you have relatively equal space on both sides of the fender?
do you have the axle spacers on the correct side?
is your fender/frame/swingarm tweaked?

Suzy-Q saddle bag supports with big, fat bolt heads inside the fender.. next tire change will try some mods to get the 140/90 in there.
I only get about 8k miles out of these crappy Dunlops.

I want a larger overall tire diameter to get lower engine RPM @ 75mph

Better to work out the changes, then knowing the clearance, you can measure the intended tire before buying it.

bag supports can go between fender and rails by adding a washer or 2.

next get the low profile bolts and you're done.

26" diameter is about as big as you can go without stretching the swingarm or mod'ing the cross brace.

I have a Metzler 880 rear tire (140/90).  I had to get allen / cap head bolts, took off the saddle bag supports, and I also put the shocks at the stiffest setting.  I also found some VS 800 intruder rear shocks on ebay and they add an inch and half on top of the standard shock.  All in all it worked out for the best.  I really enjoy it now.

And each bike is slightly different. I have a Metzler 880 140/90 on my bike with factory saddle bag supports and did not have to change the bolts out.

Suzuki quality control is notoriously lousy. Tried to swap a couple minor parts from the 98 onto the 03 (both Savages) and they would not interchange. Identical looking, same part number, don't fit.

That's half the fun in owning a Savage/S40, making it "right" for how you use it. I'd much prefer a 130/90-15, they are a touch rounder and corner better than a 140, but, I'd have to lower the rear of the bike for it to look right.  I'd love to lace a 16" rear hoop in place of the stock 15" so I can buy good tires instead of afterthought oddball versions...

Oh, just an FYI, the factory 14L-B2 battery is discontinued... break out the Dremel tools and notch your battery boxes if you plan to run a wet cell lead acid battery... 14L-A2 fits perfectly, but the vent is on the "wrong" side... world's most common bike battery...

Sorry to hijack - but Serowbot do you have a gear/rpm/speed chart for the 4 gear savage thanks. and just to go back on topic I have just had a new 140/90 tyre on the back and the fitter even had problems getting it to seat properly.
