How To Calibrate A Speedometer?
04/30/14 at 21:13:53

I am looking at getting a speedometer for my Savage that I can have in the middle of my handlebars so I don't have to keep looking down but does anyone know how to calibrate it or will it just be correct when the cable is connected?  Yes, I'm a newb!  Smiley

you'll have to get one with the same gear ratio as stock.

search for speedo and bicycle for whats been done in the past.

I posted a thread a little while back.  I believe all Japanese bikes have a speedo ratio of 2240 rpms (at the cable) = 60 mph.  Or, you could try a speedo that has a sensor mounted to the front tire that is triggered by a magnet going by.  All you have to do is tell the speedo the height ( or circumference?) of your tire.

Well, this sounds complicated to me but I'm no mechanic.  Would these list the ratio of the speedometer in the specs?

Mini speedometer and mounting cup/hardware from Dime City Cycles or similar metric parts house. GT550 tach cable. Close enough.

Bell 100 bicycle speedometer from Walmart, $20 or less, read the instructions.

Trail Tech unit like on my 2003. Read the directions. Dead on accurate, had a police friend pace me.

Air Something or Other (hard to find), self calibrates based on air pressure of the moving vehicle. Expensive, hard to mount, but dead on accurate. Look in a vintage airplane junkyard if you don't mind HUGE...

Or run your stock speedometer with the right sized tire, a 140/90-15, it corrects the built in "we don't know math" factor of running a 140/80-15 stock tire...  Grin

Yup WD is dead on, here's the speedo from Dime City that I got which actually corrected the speed discrepancy from the stock speedo http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-choppe...  and  hit up EBAY or where ever to find a tach cable from a 73-77 GT550 which is the proper cable and length to move a speedo to the bars  Wink

My only problem with that one is that it's a 140 mph speedo on a 90 mph bike!   Grin
