Just bought one!

2008, black, 11000kms,
some observations;
1. throttle slack, 1st quarter turn does nothing,needs adjusting
2. shifting not as smooth as my VLX600 but OK
3. insurance is crap, 650single pays the same as a 600/4 crotch rocket
4. belt seems tight, will adjust
5. handlebars waaaay too close, need shorter risers, better mirrors
6. bike moves out smartly from a stop, will get to know it better this summer. First backfire sounded like a Fart!!!! Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Congrats!  These bikes do have clunky shifts!  The best thing is making it the way you want it and feeling good about it.  I started mod'ing my '06 when it had less than 700 miles on it. Great tips on this site so you're in the right place.

Also; the speedo/lights etc need to be moved above the handlebars, look good on tank but not useful if you need to look down all the time.

Yeah, I just got one too, and I'm not sure if the speedo even works because I've never looked down while the bike is moving.

there's an adjustment in the cable near the throttle.

90° in the middle of the bottom run.

do you have the bent risers?  turn them around.

Not sure about your insurance rate......mine is really cheap for the Savage.  The Collision/Comprehensive is on $ 20 a year with a $ 1,000 deductible.

If you seriousl have 1/4 turn of slack, Id go down to the cable/carburetor connection. Coarse adjust there, then fine adjust on the bars. I had a little slack, not much, fixed that & it changed the "out of the corner" speeds quite a bit. If it doesnt start accelerating WHEN the throttle gets twisted, it messes that up.

I have had quite a few bikes in my life. My favorites were my Savage and a Valkyrie. The Valkyrie was too big......yes, too big.....I found myself traveling around a 95 plus mph too often and accelerating thrilling fast whenever possible. The Savage is much better suited for these western Pennsylvanian mountain roads and curves. I find myself obeying speed limits with the greatest of ease and still enjoyin' the ride.
