I got my 650 at about 9k miles. After reading here I run the Shell synth and have done a few 3k+ miles round trips in the summer from MN to FL and back and such. At over 27k I could use a longer cam chain adjuster but that's all I seem to see. I didn't have to add oil on any of those trips and I was pushing my 180 lbs. plus another 70+ pounds of camping gear etc. down the big roads at 65-70 in southern summer temps. What am I doing wrong?

Not a thing. You got a machine that was built on the tighter end of the tolerances table. Savages run the gamut from almost too tight to unbearably sloppy. Suzuki quality control on its cruiser lines is a farce compared to its sportbikes. The Savage being the "bottom of the barrel scraper" of their cruiser production, with a lot of parts not sourced from Japanese suppliers... you roll the dice, you take your chances, watch what your bike "likes/dislikes" and adapt as needed.
