Why go with chain? (Read 127 times)

The Savage belt is actually more durable than a chain. Unless you damage yours it has been known to go 75,000 miles.

The main reason folks go with a chain is so they have options to change the drive ratio. The goal is to reduce the engine rpm when out on the superslab at 70mph+.

You can do the ratio change by using Kawasaki Pulleys - but it does require some machine work and getting the pulleys is not always cheap.

Has anyone ever geared a chain (or belt) to gain more starting acceleration? ie. instead of attempting to gain more reasonable highway revs, gear it for maximum acceleration off the line (and worse highway revs).

The reason I ask, is I have another bike much more capable than the savage at high speeds. It's tempting to make the Savage a dedicated inner city bike with 60mph tops. Putting everything into blasting traffic lights as fast as possible. Might be stupid.. but tempting

I considered it. The Savage is geared to hit 100 mph at red line. Gear it 20% down and you could still do 75 mph on the freeway.
