Steering lock
04/17/14 at 12:52:19

Just doing an oldish Savage up. Somewhere in its history the steering lock has been completely removed.  Problem is is that whoever removed it just left the hole that the lock barrel went into ( albeit packed full of grease ). My question is has any member had to replace this steering lock mechanism? If so with what?  Or would it be better just to blank the hole off to keep water and crud out ?

You can get a new one, but the lock is not worth much.

Yeah, I'd probably plug or cap it, depending on what's available.

I don't have a key for mine. I've never used the steering lock on any bike I have had.

I took mine off and welded it up to save weight.  I shaved 2 lbs off the frame.  I still have it with the key

I've seen people move other people's bikes before, so I use it in big parking lots like at walmart.  Though it might result in somebody just tipping/dropping my bike instead... Angry

Yup,.. it's like the gas cap lock...
... (so no one steals yer' 2 gallons of gas?)..
Except,.. they would be an idiot to syphon it from the top, when they can get gravity feed from the fueline...
...(so no one can tamper with yer' gas?)...
Except,... your oil cap don't lock... anything they wanted to put in your gas, will do more harm in you oil...
Tongue...

Oil cap lock; that's it!  BRB, have to go run to the patent office.  I'll be selling that one to somebody tomorrow.   Grin
