Drilling Holes in Stock Exhaust: Any Advantages?
04/12/14 at 10:25:41

I'm thinking of drilling holes in the stock exhaust of my '09. Would there be any advantages performance-wise in doing so? If so, where should the holes be located? On the outer end? Or would it be better to drill out the center of the pipe. To be clear, I'm not really looking to make the bike louder. I'm also not looking to have to modify the engine.

Drill several very small holes in the back or the muffler or better yet, get a Dyna.  Either way, you'll have to rejet.

Drilling the stock muffler has been done & some have been happy with the results. I dont understand putting the time & effort into that muffler when a good looking , known performance booster is available for $20.00. A Dyna weighs less ( instant acceleration boost) looks ever so much nicer & has a nice sound. AND, IF the law ever requires a stock exhaust to get your inspection sticker, youll have one to slap on,
Tuning the carb to a Dyna is a known quantity, people here can help. Drilling holes = an unknown.,.You MITE nail it, mite not,, If youve got a bike that backfires now, just wait till ya drill it out,,

Link still works. Have fun. That mod is older than this forum, came out on the old forum (Bert's) from Germany.

I've put Dyna mufflers on both savages and all I had to do was the washer mod and adj. the air mix screw, no rejeting needed.
I bought both mufflers together on E-bay for 38.88 and 10 bucks shipping.

My bike came to me with two appx 1/2 inch holes drilled in the plate at the back of the muffler on either side of the original outlet. The only thing that does it make it a little louder.

I has no discernible effect on performance.

Get a Dyna muffler, they are cheap, sound great on the LS650 and will shed a few pounds   Wink
