Nuts!

I bought a couple new inner tubes and they come with two nuts on the valve stem.  Then I looked at the OEM IRC tube that I pulled out.  It had one nut on the inside and one nut on the outside, that was the factory installation.  I put inner tubes and tires on a Honda a year ago but don't remember the nut arrangement.

Anyway it seems strange to me since the area around the valve stem is shaped to conform to the inside of the rim and a nut inside makes for a big bump inside.  But a nut on the inside would reduce the stress on valve stem if someone over tightened the nut on the outside.

I can't find any factory instructions in the box or online.  But if you google the topic it appears that everyone has an opinion, a strong opinion.

How do you guys mount your inner tubes, nut wise?

always been told the nuts go on the outside and after installation are backed off to allow the tube to move.

Outside. Finger tight. If you use both nuts use the second one to lock the first - finger tight one - in place so it can't back off.

Single nut, with goop in the threads. Whatever goop is handy, loc-tite, antisieze, glue, rtv, teflon paste, soap... Once the tube is inflated, the nut is basically cosmetic.

+1...
Stem nuts are to hold the stem up during instal, or for filling an empty tube with air...  they should be backed off to ride...

Rarely do people do this,.. but that's how yer' s'posed to... Huh...

Thanks guys.   Sounds logical to me and 'll be putting one on the outside and none inside.  But I wonder why Suzuki put one on the inside.  Maybe it takes to long of the assembly line to remove both the nuts supplied with the tube?

So you guys are saying the nuts don't even have to be there?  It's just temporary to hold up the valve stem until you can get some air in the tube?

2 nuts,.. is so you can lock one to the other, and they won't slip back down the stem...
You leave a nut on the stem, in case you ever get a flat, or need to release all the air from the tire for repair. (pressing the relief valve without the nut will push the stem down into the tire)...
...(it beats having to carry one around in your toolbox)... Wink...
