My Savage stalled recently after a dynamic acceleration, and barely started again after that - it turned out the vacuum line was barely hanging to the petcock connector, so I guess it wasn't allowing a normal fuel flow. It was OK on the prime setting, and since I fixed the connection everything works.
Earlier I had some flakes of paint from the tank blocking the petcock, which caused similar issues (stalling as soon as the engine sucked up all the fuel). So now this is the first place I look
BTW I guess if the engine won't get enough fuel due to petcock or fuel line problems it will backfire more, so that's one way to diagnose it.
