Long ride today, and a bit disapointed
03/31/14 at 19:58:45

today I took a longish trip on the S40, and I gotta say I'm a bit let down
this is a trip I never thought twice about on my old Ninja 500, but on the S40, with no screen, I was getting a bit beat up, untill I put my feet on the rear pegs and laid forward, then it was much better

I know some on here have made Cafe's out of S40s, and I migh like to try something like that, but not full on Cafe, I'm thinking sport touring type bike, or making the S40 more like a Ninja 500 / CBR 500, etc, without droppin 3000 on a RYCA kit, and then modifying that

I'm interested in what folks who've done similar on their LS650s might have to suggest toward this end, aside from just buying another bike, especialy one with EFI (me no likey)
there are no old Ninja 500s for sale in my area, btw, so far as i can tell
besides, I like the one single carb   Cheesy

you can make it work, windshield, highway pegs, whatever it takes to make you comfortable

with no screen is the key.
i use a fly screen, enough air off the chest but still plenty of air in the face to make it comfortable up to 70.  and able to duck a little to go past 80.

thanks shorty, but highway pegs is going the opposite way from what I'm thinking
think more sportbikeish, but still with luggage, and not the full clip on route

Verslagen I know a screen will help (and I been looking at some pretty big one lol)
I'm sorta wanting to go a bit farther than that, but not full on cafe'
maybe rearsets and shorter riser on the bars? (I have the darn TT bar)
another thing I didn't mention, because I'm scatter brained, my hands go numb riding, and I think I've got it narrowed down to the gripping of the bars, especaily the right, to keep the throttle open, on a more sporty bike, you don't have to grip as tight, becasu your upper body weight is partialy on your hands
I don't remeber this problem on the Ninja, even on 3-4 hour rides

got a pic of your screen verslagen?
thanks to you both for quick repies

the suzuki screen is small and installs easy..

on long trips I move around a lot, sometimes use rear pegs, sometimes forward.. you gotta move around, no one position will be good all day

that's true shorty, and I have thought about the stock screen too
I'm a bit hesitant because I have the factory accessory bags and they wre useless, so I replaced them with other bags
on a bike with mid pegs or rearsets you can actualy stand up, that's a real relief on a long ride  Grin

All windscreens create turbulence.
What's key is to get it off your helmet.
The flyscreen is short so the turbulence hits you in the chest.
And makes a nice nest area for a bag.

An Airhawk seat pad helped me a bit and there is a thread on raising the front of the seat to gain increased comfort. The Corbin firm make a gel seat for the S40, it's probably not that cheap. Bar adjustment may help, I've never done it. We are looking at a very entry level/budget machine after all. The stock windscreen does me fine. Lets face it these things are a butt riveter.

I'm a former Ninja 500 owner,...(crashed it)...
... and a windshield hater...

It's head buffeting I can't stand...
Once,... out of 50 bikes I've ridden, I rode a V-Star with a windshield big enough to not cause buffeting... it was ridiculously large, and I looked through it, not over it,... but it did work...
I just can't imagine one that big, on a Savage...

So,.. I recently got a Sportster... and the factory shield buffeted like mad...
The stock Savage shield did fit and it was better,.. but still annoying... so I incrementally notched the headlight hole, and lowered it, an inch at a time...
3 trims.. got it down to 11" from the top of the headlight, and all the buffet is below my neck...

A flyscreen is 9" (I believe)... it won't cause head buffet, and it has to do something...
I've learned 11" is my max...

The Sporty also has midset footpegs... and they are way more comfy...
My Savage is tolerable with the slight forward foot position,... but, I have a 2" front seat lift and 2" over shocks... which allows posting from a taller seat position...

Anyway... no real advice... just personal experience...
... and,.. there's more than one way to skin a cat...
Every part, interacts with every other...
Raise this, lower that...
Grin...

PS... nothing trims a windshield better than one of those Multi-tool, vibrating cutter/sanders... (I used the half moon blade...
Harbor Freight sells them cheap...
(Pardon the giant pic... Huh...

@ verslage: hey, you have cast wheels! hey, we have the same bars!, hey, you have a cute pooch!
I think I'd want the sheild to push the wind higher than my chest, wind blast is a big part of the reason for my discomfort, I'd like it over the head if posssible
not all of it of course, just the fastest moving layer

@JC stokes: the seat really isn't a problem on mine, you want a butt riveter, try the stock saddle on a Rebel, that thing will have most beggin for mercy within 50 miles or less
what I'm trying to achieve is some forward lean without being doubled up on the bike, as I would with clip[ ons and the forward controls
how tall are you btw? the stock screen does LOOK good, and I know it'll fit the bike
I was looking at this one if I don't figure out how to get the lean on
http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/7931/i/memphis-shades-malibu-windshield
but that would be more like making a mini tourer out of the bike

Serowbot, I'm sad to hear about the crash, and surprised at the windsheild hate
I actualy converted my EX to 'street fighter' configuration because I liked the 'naked' look
after one highway ride like that I reinstalled the fairings and screen, and never thought about removing them again
I got little if any head buffeting, and it was far better than the constant blast of wind trying to push me off the bike
same with my GS850L, it came with a big ass screen, and I took it off and rode the freeway once
It never came off again

I'm gonna have another look at the stock sheild, and take some measurements

Another vote for the OEM windshield. I'm 5'6" and it works very well for me on an '06 with the stock drag style bars. Before putting it on my bike was very uncomfortable and any speed above about 55 - 60 for any length of time. With the shield it's fine.

Moving the pegs back some and lowering the bars so you're leaning forward a bit into the wind would work, but I'm not sure if it's worth the effort on a bike like this. Even as short as I am, mid mount pegs would have my knees sticking up kind of high, at least without replacing the seat too, with something a couple of inches thicker.

yeah on most cafe builds the seat is replaced to something higher, and I'm good with that
maybe I should watch some build vids from RYCA and see how thet did it
will be reading some build threads here, but it might be more work than it's worth
I know I could probably find a sport (y) bike used for less than the RYCA kit costs

Art,
I've never been on a RYCA so this is just my opinion based on what I've heard, and from looking at photos, but if you're not happy taking long rides on a stock(ish) savage, I gotta think you're gonna like long rides on a RYCA somewhat less. One of the smaller sport bikes might be a better option - Ninja 300, Honda CB500F or something similar.

that sheild look like it's block a lot of wind, I'll look into it
in the meantime, a guy I know localy has an older Savage
He took the buckhorns off and put a drag bar on short risers on
I sat on it today and liked the feel, though I don't know if taking the stack bar on mine that low might mean I can't use some of the sheilds I've been interested in
it gives a nice forward lean, witout being as extreme as clip ons
I didn't get to ride it (It's a project) but it felt pretty good

I think the stock screen mounts to fork-mounted brackets?
