Stock tank question
03/29/14 at 10:53:13

Has anyone cut open the stock tank. Is there any sort of baffling or something similar within. I had a serious rattle the other day so I took the tank off to begin inspecting and realized it is the tank that is the issue.  When I shake it it seems like something metallic is rattling around in front of the speedo hole. I can't seem to dislodge anything or see anything looking into fill neck.  Anyone know of there is anything in the tank tht can come loose. I am the only person who rides the bike and I'm sure nothing has been dropped in.

I could be two things:
Did you take the speedo off, and if you did, did it still rattle? A common issue with our bikes is a speedometer rattle- do a search in the tech section.
If it is a California bike there is a tube that runs from the top front inside the tank and exits under the tank near the front. It might have come loose.

Speedo has been off for some time.  This is definately something rattling inside the tank. I can hear it and feel it bouncing around if I shake the tank but can't seem to work it into a portion of the tank I can see through the fill hole.

There are no baffles or anything else inside the tank. what might be rattling is the petcock tube that can break off of the petcock. remove the petcock and see if the tube is still there.

+1 to removing your petcock.  The inlet holes have little plastic filters on them, and mine came off.  They rattled in the tank for a while before I realized what I was missing.  A flashlight and and some mechanical fingers fixed everything.  I run an inline filter, so I just tossed them. Wink

It is a tank that has the side sliced off.....so that extra material can be formed and welded in to make a tank that holds more fuel.  The other side has not yet been sliced off.

So after some exploratory surgery I can report that there is something....a big something in at least some tanks. I have a CA bike so that may be the reason but there is definately a vent tubing setup in the tank.

Mine was hanging already so I don't know exactly what suzuki did to hold  these still but it involved a metal clip i got out with a magnet before Turing the tank open.  So if you hear a rattle and you don't use a stock speedo this could be the mystery sound.
