Old Change

OK, Jack-of-All trades.  I have an old bucket of change I would like to roll and take to the bank.  Probably have of a 5 gallon bucket to be exact.  A lot of it is corroded and filthy.  I would certainly be embarrassed if I they looked at it.  Is their some kind of metal polisher, cleaner, that I could use?  Brasso works pretty good, but it is pretty expensive for a little bottle.  Thanks.   Cheesy

pga,
I saw something once on how they clean coins retrieved from fountains. Used a rotating cement type mixer and various chemicals and abrasives. But here is a guy that used a cleaner called CLR to do the same thing.

Chemically you might try some CLR or stong vinegar.

Mechanically you might try rolling the coins around in a tumbler or cement mixer with some corn cobs, walnut shells or similar abrasive.

Or.....maybe you can just put them in the wrappers and cash them in and no one will have to see what color they are.

Thanks for the insight!  .5 of a 5 gallon bucket is a little over 1.5K in change.  I saved all my change for 10 years and thought it would be half way decent.  I'll have do a bit of work but it'll be worth it.  Thanks again.   Cheesy

The pictures in Blinky's vid were really spot on.  I used 1 part water, 1 part  CLR, a large tub, and a hoe.  They came out pretty decent and then I went to the store and bought a little bottle of vinegar.  I'm going to soak a few overnight and see how it goes.  Some kind of tumbling motion would be very benofical.

After that I did use rotella, on the lawn mower!

You got an empty plastic container with a big enough lid to make dumpin it in & out easy? Or a coffee can,, (noisy, but wrap it in a rag) & dump some soapy water in & shake,, or maybe keep it dry & use sand?

As long as they are clean enough not to gum up their sorting machine they won't care what they look like.

I took some to the bank the other day and they weigh the rolls.  One roll wasn't up to par, so I had to unroll it and count it in front of them.   Embarrassed

A tumbler with walnut shells works for shooting brass, I'm sure that would work for coins too.
