how to kill gear box
03/23/14 at 20:32:31

Hi folks,

today while accelerating by mistake shifted to 1 instead of 3. Engine stalled, I immediately started it again and bike behaved ok, but I wonder how dangerous for gear box and engine are such mistakes?

Thanks,
Kirill.

Assuming it was cleanly in gear when you released the clutch, I doubt if this shortened the life of the engine much. The stress from this was probably felt most by the clutch plates, belt, pulleys, rear tire and spokes. And, having done this at least once myself, the shoulders and wrists probably took some of the negative g-forces also.

I've done that in cars before with no discernable problems. Probably a good thing the motor stalled instead of over-revving and throwing something at high RPMs. Gear boxes are pretty durable, it's the rest of the engine that gets stressed when RPMs go beyond the red line.

Surely you pulled the clutch in real quick, right? Man, Ive downshifted "wrong" & made the rear tire slide & the engine tach up,,
