April the 8th, Intel announces another 1,400 layoffs in Costa Rica.

Things are not going well for the chip giant.

I suspect the big push by Intel and Microsoft fueled by give aways is going to drain both companies ready cash inside the next calender year.

Do they have enough sucker base to tweek while they do this?

Do you feel like donating sucker money to them while they hunt aimlessly for a future?

Sure you do !!!  Go out and buy you a new MS Windows something or other with an Intel inside !!!

Goldman Highlights Microsoft's Shrinking Market Share

Ok, this is PC Magazine posting this stuff as breaking hard news.

Microsoft has declined in market share in the current quarter to around the 20% point (using the new financial business metric of All Computing).   Both Google and Apple are larger than Microsoft at this point in time, with a hugely greater rate of growth than Microsoft going forward.  Article explains why "owning the PC market" is just about useless in the upcoming years and why Microsoft is in real trouble.

It also goes through why Google is getting down rated from Buy to Neutral/Hold (the Chinafication of all of consumer electronics is going to take Google out as well as the orientals aren't really using Google Ad services but instead are using their own native language local competitors for ad placement).

Intel just got themselves a firm SELL rating from Goldman Sachs -- the article explains why.

I watch stuff change, and I report on it -- but if Google goes south a lot, a whale of a lot of what they support for free will go south with them.

Firefox, for one good example.   Google ad dollars currently funds Firefox browser and Firefox OS at over the 95% mark.

Google Android, and Chrome OS for an even BIGGER example of things that could go away if Google goes down the ad chute.

Android will never die though, the Open Source Android project is actually larger on the world stage than the Google Android product is right now.  If Google died tomorrow Android would greatly slow its progress but it would continue ongoing.   Chinese Android variants are HUGE now, outmassing Google's pure strain by quite a bit and the orientals spend time adding features (like movable windows) to their Android variants.

I keep saying Android needs to become a full blown OS and in the Orient IT HAS DONE THAT NOW.   Keep seeing these keyboard equipped 10" tablets coming out of the Far East that look a lot like laptops and realize that using their native Android variants that they ARE full functioning laptops.

Wink    look to see one of these OS variants come back our way within the next year as the English language pack is available on them just like any other Android product.

Which Browser is Best? Chrome vs. Firefox vs. Internet Explorer vs. Maxthon vs. Opera

Yep, the name Maxthon is new to you, it is the English language version of a Chinese browser that you will hear more about in the upcoming years.

Look to see more Chinese supported items ranking with (and over) some of the old school boys very soon.   Maxthon is already ranked over Opera browser by PC Magazine, and that is a lot of progress very quickly for an item that was in Beta last year.

Also note that Maxthon uses several of the big boy's search engines, so it is somewhat like Dog Pile as it is a compiler of the other engines' results.

http://www.geek.com/tablets/mozilla-just-got-its-first-firefox-os-tablets-fro...

"With the obvious exception of Mozilla themselves, Firefox OS might not have a bigger fan than Foxconn. The Chinese manufacturing behemoth just sent the first batch of Firefox OS tablets to Mozilla so they can forge ahead with development.

The new Firefox tablet is Foxconn’s latest show of support for Mozilla’s mobile OS.    Last June they committed to hiring 3,000 software engineers that would focus on Firefox OS.

Why do that? To prove to other companies that are thinking about marketing Firefox OS devices that Foxconn is the manufacturing partner to choose. Foxconn doesn’t want all their eggs in one basket (Apple) or even two (Android). They want to be able to provide devices running any OS their customers desire."

Huh

Remember please, the Mozilla Foundation is international, with the main branch in the USA.  The Beijing China branch is getting bigger and bigger and soon enough may be running the show in Mozilla land.

And this may be a good thing, since the Americans are getting tied up in their knickers over measly $1,000 donations, gay rights and stupid shite like that.   All the Americans and Europeans seem to be able to do right now is flip their red hair to one side and jabber on about it a lot ....

Foxconn and Firefox Beijing are forging forward with the Firefox OS, taking it into tablet space and selling the hell out of it with government supported $25 cell phones and soon to be turned loose $59-$69 10" tablets.

Firefox OS is being pushed hard by Foxconn because they can modify it to use equipment that just flat won't run Android (too weak kneed).   This means they can sell a piece of equipment where before it would have been out of reach for the people buying it.  10s of Millions of people will buy these phones this year alone because they CAN afford it.

The Chinese government approves, supports, and is making a specific custom chipset by the gazillions to power those $25 Firefox phones we keep reading about.

Firefox OS is meeting a need that is real and that nobody else can touch.  If Mozilla USA can't get their act together and get past this gay rights bullshite, look to see Foxconn and the Chinese run away with the idea, they may just fork Firefox OS and take over total control of it.

Or else Mozilla Beijing may just politely inform Mozilla USA they are taking over the lead position on Firefox OS for tablet and phone since Mozilla USA is "all tied up in their twisted knickers" at the moment.

http://www.theverge.com/2014/1/17/5320078/mozilla-first-firefox-os-tablet

"The Foxconn-built prototype isn't the highest-end tablet by any means, but it's not the worst, either: specs just released say it will have a 10-inch, 1280 x 800 display, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage paired to a 1GHz quad-core processor. In an age of high-pixel density displays, it would be pretty difficult for this device to compete with Retina iPads, the Nexus 10, or the Nexus 7, but that's never been Mozilla's goal for the platform — instead, the display is a giveaway of the company's intention to go after emerging markets.

"Mozilla wants Firefox OS on as many inexpensive devices as possible"

That's the key here: emerging markets. We saw Mozilla stepping back at the end of 2013 when the company said its Firefox OS-equipped smartphones wouldn't be coming to the US in the near future. That's because the company wants to focus on winning areas of the world where the smartphone and tablet saturation isn't as high, areas that are traditionally more price-sensitive. That's not to say that Firefox OS devices will never make it to the US — but for now, Mozilla's betting that its best chances for success lie elsewhere."

And moving they are, Firefox, very quickly, far faster than any other OS out there.  Even if Foxconn only put 300 or even 100 programmers on it (did you really believe 3,000 programmers?) that is still a lot of programmers and can make a lot of very quick progress.

(which is a good thing since they are starting out so far behind in feature-richness and you can only make a fetish out of being "bare bones" for just so long)

Firefox OS 2.0 starts emerging from its cocoon

http://www.cnet.com/news/new-features-and-appearance-for-firefox-os-2-0-emerge/

"Focusing on programming could offer some respite from the politics, and there's plenty of work to be done to modernize Mozilla's mobile OS. Firefox OS 2.0 will add several new features, including edge-swipe gestures. Swiping in from the left or right sides cycles among apps. Swiping down partway from the top will reveal an all-purpose search bar, and swiping down farther will show a task switcher.

The new version of the OS also should be more responsive to touch gestures. People strongly dislike lags between a finger swipe and a device's response.

Other notable additions on the Firefox OS roadmap for version 2.0 include:

The ability to select, copy, and paste text.
A more useful lock screen that shows music player controls and a scrollable list of notifications.
A FindMyFox phone locator feature, including remote wipe, location tracking, and the ability to make the phone emit a noise.
Integration with Firefox Accounts, a single-sign-on feature for the Firefox Marketplace, FindMyFox, and other services.
New features for creating ringtones from music.
Smarter typing input that invisibly increases the size of a letter's tap target based on predictions of what letters might come next.
NFC (near-field communication) support for sharing photos, contact information, and Web addresses with other NFC-equipped devices.
The ability to dial somebody directly from the call log.
A feature to quickly jump to the top of the email inbox; scrolling upward will reveal a "go to top" bar for faster navigation.

Less dramatic changes, including a new camera app, are set to arrive sooner with Firefox OS 1.4, which is due to enter final testing in about two weeks."

http://www.androidauthority.com/intel-vs-arm-future-mobile-technology-338340/

This article was written before Intel's meltdown and everyone got to see behind the Wizard of Oz's curtain.

All of the second half of this article was written based upon Intel PR campaigns and all the pretty chip names and wonderful nanometer claims that are not and never will be real in the fashion that they were originally portrayed.

I refer to the Intel meltdown where they burned up their 14nm line and have now had to push back all their PR BS for an entire year at least.

Since then an entire new set of fictitious product names has had to be created to cover up the fact that Intel can't build a phone chip at all on their own processes and is having to get TSMC to built them a non-competitive 28nm phone chipset for their next phone foray.

What to take away -- Intel is a regional bit player from this point forward.   As soon as their stockholders quit listening to Intel PR campaigns and start smelling the coffee, Intel is in real trouble.

By the time Intel actually comes out with a 14nm anything, it will be AFTER the ARM big boys have run off their next generation 64 bit chipsets at 10-14nm.   The ARM big boys are immensely bigger than Intel at the moment and they have the clout at TSMC to go first from now on.    Note please that MediaTek is bigger than Intel now.   Production order will be Apple, Qualcomm, Samsung, Intel with MediaTek hopping in there somewhere ahead of Intel but behind Apple.   Yup, MediaTek is growing just that fast .....

As of start of 3rd quarter this year,  all the modern ARM chipsets will have enough grunt to run a laptop (or a chromebook or chromebox to be more specific).

Look to see Intel shrink into ever increasing obscurity at that point in time, joining MS in a very limited role going into the future.

Hong Kong Electronics show is going on starting today.

So much new stuff is coming out, lots of new chips, awards and stuff that has nothing to do with the American Market (until later on in the year anyway).

China is taking care of China first, we will get stuff whenever there is enough production to bother with us as a secondary market.

If you want to watch this rather long clip, you will see Allwinner getting the #1 volume shipper award from ARM for being the largest volume ARM shipper in 2013.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=et0tUD_mL0E

If you watch the whole thing you will see Allwinner intends to compete in ALL markets, PC desktop, Laptop, Tablet and Phone.   Starting in June of this year.

Allwinner joins MediaTek now as being bigger than Intel or Microsoft.

Allwinner competes strongly in all mobile markets, and has the A80 Octa chipset now that can run a PC, a Laptop, a Chromebook, a Chromebox or a tablet.   Same chip can run Windows 8.1 but that isn't a priority to Allwinner (they say there are standards and commercial issues with Microsoft that "still needs to be work out").

Allwinner is a member of all the ARM Iinternational Standards Boards.   Allwinner supports Linaro and FOSS softwares.  Olimex and Cubieboards are both shipping the new Allwinner chipsets in open source boards that can all run Ubuntu at this time, with even better chips and better accelerated graphics support promised for this year for 'better gaming on Steam".

Allwinner is NO LONGER A LITTLE CHINESE CHEAPIE GUY -- they have grown large and progressive and are an integral part of FOSS and the ARM Standards Group at this time.

As of today, with Allwinner and MediaTek both being bigger than Intel or Microsoft (along with all the rest of the old school ARM big boys) we sorta need to change what we say about standards.

Microsoft is now viewed in China by the new big boys as the one who is "not conforming to international standards" and it is the non-compliant Microsoft that is the one that is going to be dead last to be supported accordingly.

Microsoft is the one who has got to change -- question becomes can they pluck their head out of their butt quickly enough and get compliant to current international standards before they become completely irrelevant?

Lastly as you watch the clip, note how many Chinese only OS systems are shown that are NOT KNOWN TO THE WEST RIGHT NOW.   I counted 3-4 on display just at the Allwinner booth.

Maxthon isn't the only Chinese browser/operating system the Chinese have cooked up in the last year.  Most are Open Source Android based, but the ones that tend to come here are Google Android with the Play Store.

BTW, any vendor who is counting on being x86 and Microsoft compliant to offer them a long term future is kidding themselves.

Both Intel and MS are going to have to move quickly to get in line with ARM/Android international standards.  Intel is already there with about half of their newer chip count right now and MS was sorta close with RT but has abandoned it in favor of their still to be announced Win 9 "Threshold" product which has now taken a big legal hit in the past few months.

Now that FOSS has made it clear they will legally reclaim any attached code that MS combines Linux code into, MS is now at a total loss as to how to proceed.

Without a Windroid base with Linux/Android in it, it seems MS had no real plan after all.

Windows 8.1 derivatives don't look like they will get any traction as what people are making clear that what they really want is much more like the Win 7 look and feel -- and that entire interface type won't play in the mobile world at all.

It will be interesting to see what MS comes up with -- and if they have to give it away for free when it gets here because it includes FOSS code.   Apple is giving free OS upgrades away on their OSx products now, and so is Google on their OS products.

Microsoft is smoking dope if they expect to charge people hundreds of dollars for OS product upgrades/updates when everyone else supplies them for free.   Especially when MS wants to impose non-conforming standards and all the rest of their nonsense on top of charging big $$$ for the OS.

Wink

..... and Flash, you better be glad Google still supports you or you would be just about GONE at this point in time.  HTML 5 rules in the orient.
