Drive pulley question (Read 91 times)

Jsud04 Full Member Offline SuzukiSavage.com Rocks! Posts: 223	Drive pulley question 03/09/14 at 08:41:33 What would a leak look like from the drive pulley? I ask because I tightened mine up today and noticed grease built up behind the nut... No " liquid" oil though.... None on the floor.

Cool, how about the belt... Mine is original, 86. 15,999 miles, one stone made a bubble in it but didn't push through, I got that sucker outta there, but there are some very small hair line cracks on the non-tooth side only visible when wrapped around the rear driven pulley in varying spots on the belt... No cracks on the tooth side? Is that normal or should it be changed?

I have an '88 with 3x the miles you got. only a few have stopped being continuous.

But I am assuming your saying only a few have actually broken. I am also going to assume yours has little hair line cracks as well? So what should I be looking for when it come to wear?

I don't know what you would look for.. I found out when I looked behind me and it was laying in the road.

The actual flat belt section is made of very thick tire cord (aramid/polyester) wound round and round many many times in a linear flat fashion.

The extrusion around the cords and the tooth material is a very tough nylon plastic.

The waffling on the back of the belt is to allow the relatively stiff belt to flex more easily.

Cracks form at the square bottoms of all the waffle marks over time.

Cracks are meaningless, the belt lasts until the thick cords finally give way and that takes a long long long time.

The very few that have broken spit out cleanly and did not damage the pulleys or the cases or anything else for that matter -- simply spit out on to the road.

Belts fail at over 60,000 miles -- cracks show up around 20,000 miles roughly.

You got a ways to go yet.

Posts: 1318 Australia	Re: Drive pulley question Reply #8 - 03/10/14 at 15:38:57 Re: The OP: My one had a slight oil leak (like drips of oil) from the drive pulley, I just took the nut and lock washer off, cleaned it up and refitted with a smear of blue RTV on washer and nut. No more leak.
