I saw that stat earlier today,.. and it is surprising...

It's little spoken of,.. but,.. motorcycling is disproportionately a white, male preoccupation...
That's my guess... top states are predominantly white...
It sure ain't the weather... Grin...

No offense intended... just an observation...

Here is the chart.  It didn't transport very well but it is all there.  It surprised me, I thought California would be tops because it probably has the best weather for motorcycle riding.

Pine, how is the riding in Mississippi? I'll be heading out to Columbus AFB in the summer and will more likely than not be bringing my bike with me.

Six of the top seven are Free States, you may ride without a helmet.
Six of the bottom seven are Nanny States, you must ride with a helmet.

When they passed California's helmet law the number of motorcycles dropped 40%.

Illinois... "nanny state", no helmet law...
Ranked 31 by ridership...
Ranked 34 by race...

Thats a hard question... cause i have never ridden anywhere else
1 Temps - summer ( may to sept) hot and muggy
2 weather - been more weird ( just like everywhere in the US) bouts of rain
3 roads - due to ability of politicians to blame "yazoo clay" our roads are pretty awful ( that and lack money)

Now all that said.. we have this Natchez Trace ( a FEDERAL park ) which is a biking dream. No commercial traffic, no signs, speed limit of 50, road kept up and its like 400 miles long!

Food is good   ( we are the most obese state for a reason)
gas prices aren't as bad as some/most
folks are nice ... most times

Uh, I have to call bs (lowercase bs, not uppercase BS) just because California has 801,803 which is a little less that double the 2nd highest by volume, Texas, which as 438,551. If you are going per capita then large population states like California are not going to fare well. 801,803 vs. South Dakota's paltry 69,284 and what do they do for the 8 months per year when riding is impossible?

I wonder for how many people the motorcycle is their only transportation. My wife has her car but I ride rain or shine. I know one other member on the forums where the bike is sole transportation and one or two others who use it as a primary commuter.

I don't mind the helmet laws but I don't think I could handle not being able to lane-split. I have discovered that it is not allowed anywhere else and maybe I am spoiled here in CA but if I move to another State the only thing I will miss about CA is the lane-splitting.
