Have anybody here tried to convert savage to electric bike? I saw couple of such projects on the internet. Looks like it's not cheap (motor with controller alone is about $1500), but definitely doable.

I think you'd be the first...
If I were going to do it, I'd start with a lighter bike...
A Savage is a good bike to go "old school",.. but, high tech... it ain't...

Not sure yet if I'll have guts and money for this project. Here are some similar projects on the internet:

http://green.autoblog.com/2011/08/05/enthusiast-builds-diy-sensei-ninja-250-e...
http://news.discovery.com/autos/drive/how-to-build-your-own-electric-motorcyc...

http://www.instructables.com/id/Easy-DIY-Electric-Motorcycle-Conversion/

Zero S 2014 can do 53 miles at 70mph on single charge and costs $13k. I wonder if diy project can achieve similar performance at lower costs.

Another good thing is recent progress with batteries. They are becoming lighter and capacity is increasing with every year. So range could probably be improved in couple of years just by upgrading batteries.
