WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE ????

Intel builds a GPU that’s 40 percent more efficient

"By better regulating voltage, going to sleep while not in use, and implementing a few other tweaks, Intel’s new graphics processor can use 40 percent less energy while offering the same performance as a similar chip. [PC World]

Intel’s been making pretty big strides in reducing power consumption with its Bay Trail and Haswell chips, and now the company’s taking aim at graphics processors. Intel is demonstrating a new 22nm tri-gate GPU that it says is 40 percent more efficient."

Now, having said all that and shown us a picture of it, what all is wrong with this picture?

And yes, Virginia, this is a mobile chipset for phones and tablets ....

Other than it's a test board... why does have 5 power cables?

Multiple power inputs are normal on test boards,  they help power different mock components and such.  Nothing looks obviously out of place to me, other then a large heat sink for a mobile device processor, but it is in testing.

Yep to all of that --- but what bothers me most is they are apparently still working in business group silos over at Intel still and this is the design output of the GPU silo group.  It is a separate GPU with a heat sink on it.

A SEPARATE GPU chip still .....  nobody else does it that way.   Everyone else would design the GPU in complete integration with the CPU and with the various other bits like the radio and GPS etc etc

Intel has a lot of internal changing yet to do.   They have to learn how to integrate their entire product, to make a harmonious single chip design out of it.

No wonder they still require relatively huge motherboards if all the various bits and pieces are designed separately and interfaced through the motherboard.

And I have to ask the question --- 40% more efficient compared to what ???  Your last year's clunky monster?

Intel is crowing about teaching their home designed GPU to go to wait states (sleep) while the CPU is displaying a unchanging screen.   Mobil chipsets  have been doing that for over 5 years now.

ARM Mobil chipsets are dicing out much finer details now, like how to do compute sharing with up to 8 separate CPU cores running at different speeds while outperforming VR graphics (who a strong competitor who can on chip integrate with your other stuff).

Intel is still playing with GMA graphics type thinking in a mobile world that left that level behind 5+ years ago.

And why are they boasting about having to use their tri-gate technology while still at 22mn?  All 3-D lithography techniques will cost you money in scrap and processing time.

Remember, at the current state of the art at 18-20mn the ARM designs still don't require 3-D lithography.

(but they will start needing it on the next 14-16nm step downwards).

Intel is NOT competitive by design, nor by process any more.
Ignoring what they say and looking strictly at what they do, one of the Chinese Cheapie guys (Mediatek) have lapped Intel now, actually & factually.    Lapped them on integration, processor efficiency, processor count, and lithography size.   Beat them 4 times over -- gotta sting, gotta sting bad.

Wink

I know Mediatek is South Korean and would be very upset at being called a Chinese anything.
Since they have Whupped UP on Intel I should start calling them the SKG (South Korean Giant).

Future prediction time:

Intel will crow and crow and will eventually uncork a 14nm process mobile something or other.  Because of the lithography, it will have an inherent 30-40% improvement in energy consumption (theoretically speaking) to what Intel is doing now.

But this will be a 30-40% theoretical improvement over current Intel designs which currently require a separate on-board energy nanny chip to fakemock doing something close to current REAL ARM energy consumption levels?

Prediction:   Intel's first 14nm chipsets will be VERY COSTLY and they will have to be very strongly loss leader priced so they can sell into some real products.

And once the vapor cloud actually settles they might not really be more price/performance efficient compared to the then current 20mn ARM offerings from the Chinese Cheapie guys.

This has consistently been the case before, after all the vapor settles.

Before, Intel could get away with gross inefficiency because MS ran on them.   MS is no longer a compelling advantage and Intel knows it.

The story will change drastically whenever a FOSS general purpose ARM OS becomes widely accepted.

Intel may never get their head above water ever again ....

Sounds like it is time to "short" Intel stock...or is it too late already ?   Hmmm, maybe not.  It is $24.75 today, which is about the 3 year average, so there is plenty of room to make some money on their way down.

Not yet time to count Intel out -- Nadella at Microsoft is going to show Intel THE WAY to succeed in phone/tablet space and he is gonna want his good buddy Intel to make it for him.

Nadella is gonna show Intel how to fill up all those huge wafers with billions of little bitty 22nm (then later on 14nm) copies of Microsoft's new ARM standard chipsets for Windroid.

Yup, what is gonna save both Microsoft and Intel is to make ARM their centrality -- and do it better and cheaper than the Chinese Cheapie guys can do it.

Microsoft is gonna lift a full copy of the Android Open Source Project and the Chromium OS Open Source Project while it is still out there under the Apache 2.0 license (the one that it is currently running under) and they are gonna MicroChop it as theirs.

There will be some illegality with the Chromium stuff as it isn't licensed to anyone yet by Google officially, it is just out there for community development.

So Windroid will be born, Microsoft's Threshold Project will be a frankie OS system built from Open Source Android and Open Source Chromium Project parts with some Linux parts and some BSD parts and a very few proprietary Windows parts tacked on it here and there just to legitimatize it as "Windroid".

Just like they did with DOS and OS 2 and Netscape and you name it in the past .....

It will be Windroid, the stitched together from stolen parts monster that could change the world.

Then Microsoft/Nokia/Intel is gonna want the very best of the ARM 64 bit designs run under Intel's full ARM design license (slightly modified in a proprietary fashion of course) run by the big huge wafer full at 22-14 nm on Intel's very best lithography processes to use to fuel the new Windroid Revolution .....

..... and the two large cash fat companies are going to group together to loss leader the chipsets and stolen OS system into carving out a huge new phone/tablet market share for themselves by actively running all of the least of the ARM Cheapie Chinese completely out of business inside of 6 months.   And a few of the middle sized ones as well .....

You see, Windroid will have a consistent set of published software/hardware STANDARDS associated with it .... something the cheapie guys could never get straight in their little lacrosse stick wielding little puddin' heads in a million years.

You see, Microchoke knows that the guy who publishes and controls the INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS wins all the legal battles after the fact.

Also never forget that Intel has a manufacturing side, and that at one point in time they built more white box computers CHEAPER than anyone else in the world.

The NUC itself is a current Intel in-house product and Intel builds all the motherboards, power supplies and boxes for Dell even up to today.

Microchoke has Nokia for their manufacturing force.

=====================

It is the old old Wintel Way all over again and again and yet again -- if you can't beat them fairly by competing against them with your own good ideas, then by golly screw them over by stealing their ideas from them and claiming them as yours ..... simply by writing, publishing and enforcing a set of standards.

And by actively suing the hell out of the people who breach YOUR published set of standards .... yup, the arsehole with the most lawyers always wins in the end.

And it's not like suing people for "infringement"  isn't a 1 billion+ dollars per year Business Group there at Microsoft (because it is).

The guys from Digital Research, Bell Palo Alto Labs, Netscape and IBM OS 2 are waving their arms and yelling and hopping up and down saying
"Hells Bells boys, pay attention -- you are letting them do it all over again !!!"

And they are     Undecided

Google, wake the fluck UP  !!!!

Sounds like the way things were back at the beginning when Billy went to Cupertino and spent time with Stevie ... Wozniak that is ... and learned about a new program with these "window" things on the screen, then went off and copied it.

Why else do you think they need Bill Gates back out of retirement as "Technical Advisor" so badly?

Nobody else remembers the stealing and conniving that took place back in the beginning better than the man who did it all .....

And unless Bill Gates personally says "Yes, this is the path to take" the rest of Microsoft will simply not follow anyone anywhere else.

Justin, DO something about it then.

You got the same world of choices that I started out with.   I was never (and am not now) a Linux command line geek -- I just picked my distros VERY carefully so I don't  have to be.

There is a little bit of shell shock at change over time, that is why I went dual boot and if something got dicey on me I just went back to Windows to get it done.

But this quickly became rarer and rarer until now I am running a 64 bit Linux Mint (Mate version) on a 2009 vintage $80 refurbie box from Dell Leasing and I am perfectly content with it.

No windows on it at all ..... no chasing anti-virus programs .....  no defragging .....

No expense either -- everything is free.

That is nice too -- money is getting scarcer for me all the time and I am still working a full 40 hours a week, just not at any upscale job any more.

As far as Bill and Melinda Gates supporting the extreme socialist ideals of population control and "genetic purging", that may be some guilt laid on them on by association.

There is no doubt they were at one time part of the same councils that reviewed these ideas in the past, but whether Bill and Melinda were there at the time is debatable.

Is Gates fully capable of absconding with somebody else's code then locking that code base down with published international standards then using those published standards to beat the rest of the world up for stealing "his ideas" ???

Oh yeah.   Done it 3 times in a large fashion that I can remember.

Here is the rub, he already has downloaded the code for Open Source Android and for Chromium OS as well.   That code base "as is" is gone at this point in time.

ARM and Linaro and Linux Kernel can try to fix this issue going into the future only by moving over to the GNU license, which requires all persons modifying the code to give all modifications back to the community.   Or immediately rewriting some clauses into the Apache 2.0 license (creating Apache 3.0).

Trying to keep Microsoft out of Apache 2.0 materials at this point in time won't work because too many other folks have put too much work into tweeking their own version of Android under Apache 2.0.

Sad thing is that Windroid will have strong non-free published standards that will be harshly enforced by lawsuits and all the upper level players of the ARM world will be forced by litigation costs to gravitate to honor those standards just as soon as Bill's lawyers start the "suing your ass off" stuff.

And then Microsoft will make more BILLIONS of dollars off of things they never invented or even controlled before now.

All of these open source licenses need some clauses added to prevent this sort of trollish legal take over from happening.

But factually, it may be too late for the Apache 2.0 licensed stuff if Microsoft's lawyers start to move on it now.

How very MOnsantoish of him,,
& yes, he is actively engaged in the eugenics movement, thru the "vaccinations" they so lovingly Give to the 3rd world populations and, IIRC, he is a large Monsatan stock holder.

What does a "eugenecist bastard" actually look like these days with his TV make-up on ?

Right now, so far, he has given away 28 billion dollars in total and is actually worth more today
than he was when he started "giving it all away" a few years back.

Bill Gates is 58 years old.    He is always ranked in the top 5 richest men in the world, generally in the 1st - 3rd position.

BTW, he invites you to kiss his wrinkly butt if you don't like it .....

(Whatever it is that you don't like, that is.   Bill can't be bothered to keep up with your likes and dislikes after all.)
