Sony to sell its VAIO PC business, focus on smartphones instead

Sony has announced plans to get out of the personal computer business. The company wants to sell its VAIO PC division to investment firm Japanese Industrial Partners (JIP) this year, which will make the spring 2014 product launch the last line of VAIO computers to wear the Sony name.

That decision comes at a time when mobile device sales are skyrocketing and PC sales are declining. Does that mean we should expect similar moves from other big players including Apple, Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, and Lenovo? It’s probably too early to say — although most of those companies now offer phones and tablets in addition to PCs.

Cheap easy predictions for year 2014

Tablet sales clearly & cleanly goes past Win PC sales.   Tablets cleanly take over the consumer laptop/PC spot for casual consumption uses.   Business goes laptops, Chromebooks and all-in-ones -- and pretty much drops the desktop PC format completely.

Apple sells more Mac products than Win PC does (until the ARM friendly Win 9 comes out).

Android becomes BY FAR AND AWAY the biggest worldwide Internet capable operating system.   Phones and tablets rule consumer computing world-wide.

Apple picks up whatever PC drops until an accepted general use ARM OS becomes available, then whatever PC drops will be split between the two.   Win 9-10 might well be this OS with Ubuntu as the general FOSS OS that crowds them into finally changing..

...... longer term no-brainer predictions ......

Intel drops legacy X86 system calls as their primary and goes with ARM/Android compatible system calls as primary on all their new chipsets.

Microsoft has to re-write the planned Windows 9-10 to use ARM/Android system calls.   Microsoft has to join FOSS and contribute to the Linux/Linaro kernel system to some degree as it needs to use too much of the ARM/FOSS code to keep on hiding that they are doing it.

Win 9-10 will run natively on some popular very current 64 bit ARM processor based products.

Standards finally come to ARM starting at 64 bit Win 9-10 and rolling on forward.

My biggest problem with laptops and tablets is the screen size, and quality. I do a lot of photo editing and have an Asus Pro-Art 24" monitor, and find myself wishing for something larger on occasion. Also, I have 3 TB of memory to handle all the photos and some videos, and a laptop or tablet just don't cut the mustard for me, although it would be nice to be portable.

Sony PC's were ALWAYS over priced.. and full of bloatware. I cleaned up one ( desktop) and really it was no different that any HP or Packard Bell of its day.  They had a tiny share based on their name.

Sony isn't a big player in the USA, yes this is very true.   But they are the first of the old school Japanese folks to follow some of the American old school crew in dropping the PC format way way down in production volume.

More will follow.   PC is crashing now --- and Apple is certainly rejoicing.

This graph is USA only and it shows Apple tablets and phones picking up almost all of what PC is dropping.   Apple is boasting they took over the sales lead in the USA last month (figures not verified yet by Microsoft, of course).   Note that Apple laptops/desktops are flat to previous years, no real growth at all.

==============

Android/Chromebook is a different threat to PC and like Apple they show strong growth last year, growth that if it continues will put Windows laptop sales in a majority danger within a year or so.

Certainly, if you lump Apple/Chromebook/Android-all-in-ones together world-wide, they already outmass Windows PC/laptop sales for the first part of this year already.   Windows is not winning anywhere anymore.

This is a fuzzy USA/Britain type graph that shows Apple's installed base as still being bigger than the installed base of Android (all flavors).   This is talking about the "total installed base", not current sales.   Android is selling in today at 83% of the total sales currently going on.

Take this almost equal Apple/Android graph and lump it against the Apple/Windows graph earlier --- Windows is in real trouble.

Microsoft likes to say their sales share is increasing (and it is, technically compared to itself last year) -- but compared to the total market growth amount they are losing ground very rapidly, generally to Android worldwide (except in the USA where Apple still picks up much of what Windows drops).

Win 9 MUST be an instant hit and it must be able to run on ARM chipsets.

Or if MS needs another two year reboot due to screwing up yet again they might as well hang it up, they won't have a "current sales" market share left any more to defend.
