Nearly dumpped the Sportster...

I hit a sand/gravel patch while taking off at the crossroads in Sonoita...
Once the rear wheel let loose, the revs when way up, and the bike went sidewards on me...
575lbs takes a lot more muscle to bring back than our little Savage...
Luckily the patch wasn't too big,.. so I got across it...
Kinda embarrassing though... Embarrassed...

If it ever happens to you... stay calm, throttle steady, don't over-correct, and hope ...
Hope nobody saw it... Grin...

I'm gonna' try to show the torquemonster a bit more respect...

You got the 1200 modle ?   I realize the 883 will do it too  , just not as quick as the 1200 will.   I've had both.

I know what you mean about that extra weight !    I droped mine in wet grass once (Ground was soft too) , and once that weight get out of control there ain't much ya can do .

I'm not afraid of the S-40 at all ,  but keep a close eye on the Sportster ... and wonder how in the heck do those fellers on those 800 lbs   bikes keep from trading em in ?    Huh

This is just an 883... (plenty for me)...
I'm definitely gonna' be watching it more closely...
...but... it's really willing to jump off the line...

What I like about the Savage is you can freely use the power it has...  like a perfect balance...
You can only get into enough trouble that you can still get out of it...

I'm glad Jerry thought I was showing off... (he was riding right behind me)... (maybe I didn't look as dumb as I felt)...
...but I bet I did... Grin...

Last winter a ice ptrch was in the road leading up to the ferry, it was on a downhill approach in a slight curve.....
I almost went over slowly, but was able to plant both feet, tho skiing , and lift her back under me....finished the "controlled" slip to a dry spot and onto the toll booth, 3 Harley's went down behind me. Had to be the weight.....
Not riding this winter if it stays below 34 for any length of time....

Never worry about anyone seeing, just worry about keeping yourself safe. Who cares if you look like a fool as long as you come out unscathed  Wink

Glad you are both alright.  Do the newer Sporties have better weight distribution? The only one I've ever ridden was a 79' iron lung 1000cc and it was top heavy IMO.

The aluminum heads of the EVO engine supposedly helped,.. but I rode an 03/04' and it still felt top heavy to me...
This newer 12' model is a Superlow... and it has a wider, flatter, 4.5g tank that sits lower in the frame.  This, combined with 18/17" wheel combo, and low profile tires makes it much less top heavy then older models... a new frame that contains rubber engine mounting may help too,.. although ground clearance suffers...
Clutch pull is much easier too, (don't know why)...
All in all, it feels very un-Harley... while keeping the sound and power...
I imagine it feels most like a Triumph America... Smoother and more refined than other Hogs...
The only reminder that yer' on a Harley the hard clunking shifts... Smooth and positive,.. but you do still stomp it pretty hard and get the loud clunk sound... Grin...
