Id dump the oil into a clean, aluminum pan & run a magnet thru it & see what kinda stuff shows up. Id "autopsy" the oil filter & look around, wiping with a clean white cloth, like T-shirt material, inside where the filter sits. Look for bits of metal.,.chunks bigger than a fine powder are not a good sign, Do that before you invest in those materials,, dont open anything, You mite decide against even putting the oil in,, As for needing a VIN, naaah,, these things didnt change that much, an oil filter for a 650 savage is the same, first one made to now. Air filters, too. There were changes in the starter gears & electrics & transmission went from 4 to 5 gears & EPA regs made the jetting change down thru the years,but otherwise, the guts & parts stayed the same, brakes & rotors & everything except the length of cables & hoses, due to handlebars made differently.
