Hi. I have reading a lot of post here about the importance of good oil pressure, but I haven´t been seen a number. How much is good oil pressure and at what rpm is it rated ?

The oil pressure issue with the Savage - is when the idle is set too low.  At low rpm's the oil pump does not supply enough flow to keep the cam and rockers properly lubricated.  What little flow is provided by the oil pump at low rpm's just passes through the lower end and there is not enough flow to send anything up to the head.

The other issue with the oil pump usually occurs when you have taken the clutch cover off, and removed the clutch basket.  It is possible for you to omit the small pin that fits through the oil pomp shaft and engages the gear with the shaft - or the gear is put on with the wrong side out.  Either of those mistakes and oil pump is not driven by the engine rotation, and the oil never gets pumped.

And the other issue with oil occurs when the oil level is not checked and the bike is run out of oil.  Several forum members have accidently done this and severely damaged their engines.  A Savage that is in good condition doesn't use much oil at moderate speeds, and we get used to riding around and never adding oil between oil changes.  Then we get complacent and go for a long fast ride on the highway at 70+ mph.....and before long the oil is used up and the engine dies a painful and expensive death.  The big single either burns, or blows the oil out the breather tube at sustained highway speeds........so check your oil frequently when you are traveling at speed.

Thank you.
When my oil pressure should be just fine. I was a bit worried it was too low. My engine runs fine when cold (thick oil) but has a quite loud tapping noise when warm. Now I am thinking  excessive play in the camshaft bearings. Could this be the case.

Ticking noises are pretty normal for this bike - the rocker arm valve lash is most likely your issue........or if the sound is lower down than it could be the cam chain tensioner.

Have you ever checked the valve clearance?

I have set the valve clearance and the chain tensioner if fine, only about 7-8mm out. If it had anything to do with the valves the problem should be worst then the engine was cold, right ?

I believe my bike gets louder as it warms up.  I did find that my headlight ring was making a bunch of noise - but for a while I thought my valve train was the culprit.  Then one day I reached up and grabbed the headlight and squeezed....and all the noise went away!

Take care to monitor your engine frequently until you learn the oil usage patterns and temperature tendency....

Youll likely see an increase in oil use as mileage builds on that last oil change. Also, running hard, hitting high rpm, I started carrying a 2 stroke oil container, for chainsaws, just a coupla ounces, enough to help,

I also had a noisy headlight a few years ago  Wink I very rarely run it hard and at never constant high speeds, most of the time I am at 50-55 Mph. The bike dont much oil now and never has. I know it quite well, I have owned it since 2003
