Yesterday the wife and I were on ebay for a while ordered most of the stuff we need for our off-grid power generation for our Nevada property.

It is quite a relief knowing will have a power to run refrigeration this time which will make it much better for us when we go back up there this spring.

No refrigeration for our groceries was our biggest problem last year but we ain't got to worry about that now.

We got some solar panels and a 2500 watt inverter coming sometime next week.

I also managed to get the ram I need for this dino-laptop.

Bravo Yonuh! I wish solar was better suited for our weather out here. From research and testing we just have too few days to make solar pay for itself in a reasonable time.

from what I understand the surplus has to go into the batteries or the inverter will shut down. If your battery bank is too small, you'll overcharge the batteries or shut down the inverter. don't know how true it is, but something to keep in the back of your mind. my thought was too burn off the surplus with electric heaters.

my system is grid tied. but I'm looking for a way to tap into the cells when the power goes down for emergency power.

There are "controllers" out there that will keep the battery packs from overcharging.
Also... if you are planning to go totally off grid and still have access to a power grid, channel your excess power back to the power company.
The power company here actually pays those folks money for the power they "donate" back into the system.
But trust me, you will have to have a "LARGE" setup to have that happen, or have a smaller usage than your system puts out.
I've been watching tons of videos for solar and wind power lately, and it looks like the most expensive part of the system now is the batteries.
Lots of folks are buying used deep cycle ones or picking up "restored" ones locally.
With the shutdown of factories around my old home town I am thinking of salvaging some from a local factory up there, my brother says there are a few in town that have been empty for awhile (like years!).
Lots of ebay sellers get them that way, so look around where you are and see if that would be a cheaper alternative for you.

That sounds like a very good idea to get batteries OR.

Grid tied is not an option for us, the closest utility pole is almost a mile away and it would be far to expensive to have the power company run us a line. So we are going completely off grid for our power.

I too had been looking up all kinds of videos and documents concerning solar/wind power generation and I have already implemented some if not most of the suggestions and tips they have provided. Even downloaded several vids off of you tube so I can re-watch them at any time to refresh my memory of what was suggested.

I think it is so coll that you are gettig to do this. It always seems to me "if money were no object" how much better things could be done. To me the whole idea of batteries just seems an old broken path. Problem is.. any other idea is currently just not available to common folk.

I always thing of most resouces as a storage meduim for energy. Here in MS .. water ( free rain water) is pleantiful.. so my ideas seem revolve around using that as a storage.

excess electricity + H2O = H2 and O2...
When you need heat/power burn the H2
Of course a fuel cell would be the bomb
as would sodium-sulfer batteries

Unfortunately the ram didn't work.
