Rear belt pully squeak
12/19/13 at 15:00:59
My understanding us the squeaking noise is just part of owning an S40. It is getting really loud. I didn't notice how bad it was till I heard my buddy go down the road. I could hear it 100 yards down the road. We adjusted the belt and back tire a little bit. Does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks and happy holidays.

could be excessive tension or alignment.
tension...
grab the belt on the low side in the middle give or take a mile...
if you can twist it 90° it's fine.
Alignment...
lift the rear wheel off the ground, take the bike outta gear and spin the wheel. Watch the belt, does it track to one side? Tighten the side it tracks to. Repeat spinning the wheel the other way. Try to get it in the middle or at least not hard against either side. If you can't getRdone, check the pulley bearings, spacers on right side, and dampers.

Thanks Verslagen. Do I understand this correctly: I should be able to twist the belt to a 90 degree angle if it has the proper tension? I can probably twist it to a 45 degree angle as is. Best regards.

Any lumberjack CAN get that 90*.. It needs to be able to twist 90* w/o breaking a sweat.

Once you have the tension set....then play around with the alignment of the rear wheel until the belt rides down the center of the pulley. If the belt is riding up against one side....then tighten the adjuster on the side it is rubbing....or loosen the opposite side a bit and get the belt so it rides in the center. You should be able to see a small gap on both sides of the belt....it should not rub against the sides of the pulley.

Your belt is too tight. Also, check the pulleys - sometimes a piece of gravel can get wedged in between the teeth, and that can/will force the belt to lean onto the pulley sidewall = squeal. Been there

That was my next concern. How much play should be in the rear pulley? It had more play in it than I can remember. But it has been a long time since I had looked at it. I can get it to move maybe a quarter inch each way. My initial thoughts was a spacer needs to be replaced. Thanks and happy holidays.

If you have excessive wobble in the rear pulley, try cutting some spacers out of a rubber floor mat or innertube or rubber roofing to take up some slack.

Wobble would only occur because of worn bearings/axle wear. Spacers in the hub provide shock resistance when accelerating or decelerating. Try some belt dressing. it usually comes in a spray can. Also do the checks listed here.

If the pulley is loose enough to start causing jerky, snatchy, accel/decel I'd think about Daves mod...
'Course... we do have a torquey engine... some snatch is cool...

The mod that I did on mine was not to stop the rotational movement of the pulley.....it is to take up some of the wobble play and help to keep the pulley parallel with the wheel hub. The bearing that is on the pulley hub just seems to allow too much wobble, even on a low mileage bike.
